Second Street Brewery Opens --------------------------- Bryan L. Bennett As most of you are probably aware, the Second Street Brewery has opened for business in Santa Fe. They are located on Second St., of course, just across the railroad tracks from Furrows. I stopped in on their fourth day of business and enjoyed what I saw. The sitting room was nice and airy with lots of windows. There was a small alcove with 2 dart boards, which I liked to see. Seating was comfortable and I'd have no problem hanging out there often. And something many folks will appreciate is the fact that this is a non-smoking pub. Maybe by summer they'll have a couple of outdoor tables for us nicotine addicts. The food Lara and I sampled was more than tasty enough to keep the hunger satisfied while enjoying their fine beers. And the two beer I tried were good. I had a pint of Extra Special Bitters that went down very smooth with a nice hop character and clean, malty/bitter taste. I also had a sample of their Cream Stout. This was a very nice stout, but it was a bit too dry to be called a cream. They said the brewer (sorry, I cannot remember his name but he was at the Holiday Bash at Sandy's) was working on the recipe to get it a bit "creamier". Personally I'd love it if they left the beer the way it is and just changed the name! The prices on food and beer were both reasonable, with Lara and I getting out with lunch and a pint each for under $20. If you haven't already done so, check the place out. You'll probably find yourself going back often.
