Ted Johnston

1. Where do you live?
Phoenixville, PA

2. What is your "brewery" name?
The Griffen Brewery

3. Year you started brewing
October 27, 1993

4. Are you BJCP certified?
Certified (with same excuse as Joe Lynn)

5. Favorite, most knowledgeable styles
Started with English ales/bitters, added German lagers, now brewing/drinking
Belgian.

6. Most Interesting Batch Made
Hopefully the Flemish Pale that I made with the Iron Hill Blond Barleywine
second runnings in January (still in fermenter in September).

7. Greatest Brewing Moment
In 95, my Dortmunder Export (tenth batch, first all grain) dropped from 39
points in first round of Nationals to 20 points in second round (infected?). The homebrewer of the year won the German Light Lager category with his BOS Helles and George Fix took second with his Dortmunder; I was last.

In 96, George was written up in the Zymurgy with photos of his home brewery (SS conical fermenter, SS tanks, 6 frigs, microscopes, etc.) and a note that he had once again won the Denver region with his Dortmunder. But that year, I beat George and won the German Light Light Lager Gold Medal with my latest Dortmunder.

8. Worst Brewing Moment
Looking in the refrig and seeing a huge, white fuzzy mass floating in the
lagering carboy of Oktoberfest and thinking "what kind of massive infection is growing in my beer?". Turned out it was ice crystals because the carboy was pushed all the way back against the coiling coils. Racked it to a keg a few days later and left about 1 gallon of ice slush behind. Turned into 4 gallons of a very smooth EisFest.

9. Words to live by

10. Something "non-brewing"
If I didn't homebrew, all of my home renovation projects might
have been completed by now.
