Meeting
Location |
An update was given on National Mead Day which was August 6. There were 14 people in attendance and 66 gallons of mead were made. Many fine meads, both homebrew and commercial, were sampled and Jim Navecky cooked up some fine CBC Stout boiled brats and burgers.
Introductions were given with a few new faces and about 35 folks in attendance.
Oktoberfest is Sunday September 18th at Montegue Lake. Details here.
The Blue Ridge Brew Off 2005 will be hosted by MALT in Ashville September 24th and 25th. Entry deadline is Sept.10 at 5pm. Enter early and often at their online registration. They need volunteers for stewards and judges, if you have the time and talent please volunteer. Without the aid of neighboring clubs none of us could pull off our competitions.
As part of the CARBOY education department Jim Kinn has two interesting projects planned.
1. Hop Evaluation Project- With so many hops available on the brewer’s palette it becomes difficult to make selections for the brewer to produce the intended result in a beer. Part of that is the brewing process but the part we will be dealing with is evaluating and comparing hops varieties including Bittering, flavoring and aroma. This will require participants to follow a process that will be the same for all. The intention is to have the evaluations for the October CARBOY meeting. I will email everyone the process.
2. Delirium Tremens Project - This is a Strong Golden Belgian Ale that I was able to get on tap at the Old Chicago sports bar in Clearwater Florida. It came in its own Duval shaped glass and was a vision to behold, golden with a white head. This is a beer worth replicating. On the way to the airport I purchased several Belgian beers and one of them was Delirium Tremens.
Since then I have learned that the key element to this beer is the yeasts (2) that can be cultured in the bottle. Thus the project will be for me to do just that but build enough yeast for a group of CARBOY that would like to make this beer. I have recipes from some Dutch brewers that were able to talk to the brewmaster at the brewery in Belgium.
If
you're interested in either of these project please contact Jim
Kinn.
We then went into "TELL US ABOUT THIS BEER"!
