Meeting
Location |
The Christmas Party scheduled for December 10th was discussed. It will be like last year with the food provided by the club and interesting commercial beers or homebrew will be brought by the club members. It will once again be at the Oxford Hunt Clubhouse in Cary.
The upcoming PSBO competition in Columbia, SC was mentioned. A few members may be attending.
Jim Kinn mentioned that a Turkey Fryer that was on sale at Sears (Crabtree) had been returned and was missing some burner parts, but could probably be purchased for $15. It is a great deal with a 30 qt pot with a spigot.
Jim Kinn also reminded everyone of his offer to “mentor” someone through the All Grain brewing process. He would provide the equipment and ingredients and they would pay him for the gas and ingredients and provide their own yeast. The costs for any batch should be $10 or less. Contact Jim Kinn if anyone is interested to setup a date to brew.
A BJCP class may potentially be held for interested parties with an exam scheduled for a NC location in the Summer of 2005.
We then went into "TELL US ABOUT THIS BEER"!

Where: Oxford Hunt Clubhouse, 120 Fallsworth Dr, Cary, NC 27513
When: Friday, December 10th
Hours: 6:30 pm - 10 pm
What to Bring: It is free, but please bring beer for everyone to sample, either some homebrew or interesting commercial beers. If you don't want to drink from a plastic cup, feel free to bring a glass for beer..
Food: Chips, Dips, and Finger Foods provided by the club. We'd call them Hors d'Oeuvres if we could figure out how to spell that.
Directions (thanks to Dave Buning):
From Raleigh -- take US 1 to the Cary Parkway exit. Exit right and stay on Cary Parkway for approx. 4.3 miles. (you will cross Kildaire Farms Road, Lake Pine, and Old Apex) and turn right onto W. Chatham (only goes right). Go 0.7 miles and turn left onto Fallsworth. The clubhouse is at the end of Fallsworth.
From Durham -- take Highway 55 to High House Road. Turn left onto High House and go approx. 3.5 (?) miles to Cary Parkway (Stop light). Turn right onto Cary Parkway and go approx. 1.8 miles and turn left onto W. Chatham (only goes left -- there is no light, but Peace Presbyterian Church is on the corner). Go 0.7 miles and turn left onto Fallsworth. The clubhouse is at the end of Fallsworth.
What if I cannot attend: We will talk about you in an unflattering manner.
Seamane’s Malt Cookie Recipe (cookies at October meeting)
3/4
C butter-flavor shortening, softened (not melted)
3/4 C butter (softened, not melted)
2 C sugar
2 egg whites (or fake eggs)
1 C Light LME (**using hopped malt might be interesting, or a dark, though a
little more sugar might be needed**)
4 C flour
4 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 to 3/4 C "hopped sugar" (place white sugar in a bag with flower hops for several days; this is probably not necessary if hopped malt is used) or regular white sugar
-----------------------------------------------
Mix flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl and set aside.
Mix on medium speed: butter, shortening, sugar, and malt syrup.
Add egg whites and vanilla to butter mix.
Add flour mixture.
Cover bowl of batter with plastic wrap (or put in tupperware) and put in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
Heat oven to 375 degrees. Form batter into 1" balls and roll one side only in sugar. Place non-sugared side down on an ungreased baking sheet. Cook for 9-10 minutes. (The more you cook them, the crispier/harder the cookies get, so if you like them chewy, undercook them a bit. They'll look kind of battery in the middle when you first take them out of the oven and be quite brown around the edges and in spots on the top.) Move the cookies as soon as you can (but not immediately, or they'll fall apart) to a cooling rack. Enjoy with a malted beverage of your choice!
