Have no idea what happened, but Brews and Views upended itself somewhere about June 11. All posts, users, etc were lost! I've reviewed all the pertinent logs to determine what might have occurred, but I can find nothing. Very strange.

In any case, I've restored the backup from late May - the one made just before the upgrade to 4.0. My apologies for the lost threads.

Now, I guess I'm back to the drawing board on reconfiguring this beast. When it rains: it pours.

Thanks for keeping at it, Pat.

Wow, this new board is high tech! Looks to be better suited for us computerate illiterate types. Lets see if now I can finally post a picture of myself:

Cool! But, jeez, have I really posted here over 2000 times? I need to get a life. Yet Bill Pierce has only posted 30 some times. Hmmm....

And how do I change my status from "New Member"? I tried editing it in my profile, but the change doesn't show up here.

I answered my own question - status changes through posting! Now I'm a junior member. I guess I'll never achieve the status I gave myself in my profile

It appears that going from 2006 posts to 2007 upgraded you to a junior member. And thanks for voting my post down!

Pat, thanks once again for all of your efforts. The new look is a little more readable.

I have noticed one thing. It used to be that the board kept track of which threads contained new unread posts (in a different color), which made it easy to read only new messages when I checked the board. I assumed that my browser knew which messages had been read, but this doesn't seem to be the case any longer.

If you notice, Bill, the main page has a "new" arrow indicating new posts when you open it up.

Since you didn't notice that, I am going to have to vote you a rating of one star.

Well, Chumley, I was used to clicking on "Last Day" in the left pane and seeing those threads with new messages highlighted in a different color. I don't normally look at the opening page by topic and then click on "Brews & Views," but now that you mention it I see what you're talking about. It's slightly less convenient for me, but good enough to do the job. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks, guys. Unfortunately, aside from some assistance in moderating the HBD posting queue from Spencer Thomas, the HBD and Brewery are solo efforts. The HBD has been solo for years. The Brewery became solo with Karl's "retirement" last year.

After I get more of this squared away, I'll be putting up a few "help wanted" signs on the Brewery domain. I'll be looking for people to handle the infobase clubs list (it's been made to look like an automated process, but it ain't), supplier list (same deal. I think they were both automated at one time, but...), and the Brewery links page. After those are delgated, I might start seeking a new code-meister. Maybe that way, I won't lose my paying job over this stuff...

"After those are delgated, I might start seeking a new code-meister. Maybe that way, I won't lose my paying job over this stuff..."

Pat-

I strongly recomend that you take a look at discussion software like vBulletin or phpBB. Their free or very cheap, are much easier to maintain, have built in backup features, and are very proven in other discussion forums. Best of all it will take a load off your shoulders.

My $.02.....

I've used a few of the "out there" BBS programs, and I agree. Discus was updated out of desperation - with my kingdom crumbling around me, I didn't want to lose it all for want of a horse :^) IE, porting all the old stuff wo something else, without having a clear concept of what that something else was to be...

In any case, the Discus update is magnificent in comparison to the old version, and I'm complacent with it. I think the recent lost files was either my fault (too much lat-night sys-admining) or came about from trying to programatically recover what turned out to be a dead hard-drive.

Pat, is the ability to edit a post yet to be enabled, or is it not possible with the new version? Please pardon me if the feature is available and I overlooked it.

There was a recent post on the Digest regarding sending you a few beers for your efforts. Anyone else out there, check it out here...

Bill,

The edit option is enabled, but I do not see any control on the messages to allow editing. I'll have to read up on it a bit and see what's going on there...

Mission accomplished - see the little icon at teh upper right of the message clock - that's your editor. I've set it to allow you to edit your post any time with 24 hours of posting it. If this seems insufficient or excessive, let me know...

Pat, here's what I found from the Discus documentation:

There are two main ways a registered user can access the "Edit" and "Delete" functionality to operate upon their own posts:

If supported by the skin and enabled by the board administrator, icons or other links may be placed with each message to link directly to the edit or delete functions.

Otherwise, the user may login to edit his or her profile. If the "Show list of my most recent posts when editing my profile" preference is enabled, a list of the user's most recent posts will be displayed. Additionally, if any of those posts can be edited or deleted, an icon to allow this action will be displayed within the post list.

However, when I go to Edit Profile there is no list of recent posts to edit, even though that option is checked in the profile.

Well, look at that! In the upper right corner of each post is a pencil and paper icon. If you hover the cursor over the icon it says "Edit Post," and clicking on it allows you to revise it.

There's my answer. No need for you to do any more, Pat.

How is it possible that Bill only has 48 posts to his credit while Chumley has over 2000?

I being the only member of the 2000 post club, I view all others as being rank amateurs in the field of homebrewing. Clearly, everything I post should be viewed as the gospel truth, and post by others under 1000 should be viewed with a certain amount of trepidation.

Well, maybe I'll make an exception for Walt. At 1898, he is close enough, and he certainly outperforms me in the volume category.

Not so fast! Denny is over 3000 posts....!

Funny thing I just noticed about you Chumley: you have gone from "new member" to "junior member" to "member" to "advanced member" to "senior member" all within this thread. You must learn really quickly!
