Short notice, but late Tuesday morning a buddy is going to Des Moines for a day or two. Any recommendations for a brewpub with good food? He's particularly fond of stouts. Not sure where they are staying. |

have you searched on http://www.pubcrawler.com/Template/index.cfm ? Give a man a beer and he'll waste an hour. Teach a man to brew and he'll waste a lifetime.

If your friend has a little extra time, it would be worth his while to make a short trip up to Iowa City to visit John's Grocery. It's one of the finest beer stores between both coasts. http://www.johnsgrocery.com/ Wayne Bugeater Brewing Company http://www.lincolnlagers.com/

Don't know a thing about Des Moines except it's in Iowa, and they have corn. But didn't the "Should I Take The Plunge?" thread mention a couple of brewpubs by name? |

Yeah Bob, I thought about Pubcrawler, but I trust the opinions around here MUCH more. Dhacker, I think you are right now that you mention it. I'm going to go check that out. Davidw, aren't you in Des Moines? |

Court Ave. has a pretty good reputation in Des Moines. (It's been a year or so since I've been there) The Rock Bottom, out on the west end of town, really surprised me. They had some excellent seasonal stuff when I was there and I was always biased against a chain deal like that. There are also some great beer bars downtown. The Hessian House (German) and the Red Monk (Belgian) and a newer place called El Bait Shop that boasts 105 beers on tap. Des Moines is a fantastic beer town with a wonderful beer culture. Your friend should add an extra day or so to his schedule. |

Thanks Rob, I'll pass that info on. He is going with a salesman (we are in engineering), so I'm sure good food and drinks will be in the budget. Any of those towards the east end? The business portion of their trip will be near the I-80/I-35/I-235 interchange on the north end, so I assume they will stay somewhere around there. |

I'm actually over by Iowa City (2 hr. drive) but make it to DSM frequently. Beyond what Rob has mentioned there is also The Royal Mile (the Red Monk being right upstairs) which is an English pub atmosphere. They typically have several beers on hand pump. The Hessen Haus is just a block or so down the street. So if they are willing to go downtown you have several offerings right in close proximity to each other. And, I'm not sure of the location, but there is also Granite City. Although I find their methodology peculiar, a friend of mine works there now and I'm certain he'll bring a good amount of his influence from working at several Colorado brewpubs. |

Thanks much guys, I just passed all the info on to him. He's talking about some go-carts on the west end as well, I hope he does those BEFORE hitting any of the brewpubs! |

Granite City is out in West Des Moines. Its a 20 minute drive from the downtown hotspots. Court Avenue Brewing Company is my recommendation. He had ( I think still does have ) a Juniper Rye on tap that is very nice. |

As the others have mentioned, Des Moines has a decent beer culture for a relatively small city in the middle of the prairies. Not that it's difficult to get around, but for the sake of safety your friend should concentrate his drinking downtown, where most of the choices are in easy walking distance. If he's staying on the northeast side of the city he might consider a cab. |
