Is this mold on my wit? I think the kicker for me is the 1/2" ring around the edge of the carboy that has nothing there - where the sanitizer would have been on the glass. Can I rack beer out from underneath the mold and try to save it? Or maybe it's not mold at all? |

It appears to me to be fuzzy. It is "probably" not Brett, but who really knows? Dan --This space is again being left intentionally blank.-

Would it have a peculiar odor or anything? It smells OK to me. Or would you not get the barnyard aromas until later on? |

Years ago, I had a brown fuzzy mold. The beer turned out OK. Your mold appears to be white fuzzy, so I really can't say much about it except that I doubt that it is Brett. Dan --This space is again being left intentionally blank.-

Ric, please note my choice of phrasing. I would hope that the "Got'cha Guys" would be satisfied with my opinions if expressed in a less declarative way. I have learned my lesson! Thanks "Guys." Dan --This space is again being left intentionally blank.-

I had a similar look to my first brew, but a few days later the white stuff turned into larger bubbles... so I was told that it was just small bubbles... and the brew turned out GREAT...!!! So jsut wait and see... |

It's hard to see for sure, but it looks like starch clumps to me. I get this a lot on many brews, or sometimes a white film across the entire surface. Mold would completely float on the surface. Some of these lumps look partially submerged like icebergs, which would not be mold. Can mold grow in alcohol? I have yet to see any. |

I've had mold before...actually blue stuff. I set berr to ferment and left town for a 2 months. There was blow off and the mold started in the air lock...or rather on it. You could see how it travelled down the crusty blowoff finally reaching the beer surface. I racked from under and after a long cold condition the beer was awesome Bellybuster Bob www.bellybuster.netfirms.com

Some molds are somewhat alcohol tolerant and can survive in beer. Many molds are benign in terms of their effect on beer flavor. Of course this assumes we are in fact discussing mold. There is also the rather widely held opinion that the phenomenon depicted above is yeast colonies. |

That 1/2 ring of nothing is caused by the shape of the surface of the beer due to surface tension. The surface is actually slightly concave Bellybuster Bob www.bellybuster.netfirms.com
