This is sorta outside the brewing sphere, but I though brewers might find it interesting:
We all know that pro brewers whirlpool to separate trub from wort and some of us do it too. The Jan 20th edition of The Economist reports that a doc in Australia has put the technique to use as a cheaper, faster way to separate red blood cell from plasma in samples sent for analysis. It apparently works as well as the current most common technique (centrifuge) but can work with smaller samples. The equipment is cheaper and can be shrunk to the size of a credit card.
The same article notes that Einstein studied the phenomenon at one time, intrigued by the way tea leaves settled in the middle of his teacup.
