http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-070919-pizza-beer,0,2814544.story?tra ck=rss By Josh Noel Tribune staff reporter 8:47 AM CDT, September 19, 2007 Click here to find out more! First a novelty limited to the Western Suburbs, pizza beer will soon be coming to Chicago store shelves. The unlikely ale, heavy with tomatoes, garlic, basil and oregano, will begin production at a Wisconsin brewery within weeks and should be available by early November, said its creator, St. Charles home brewer Tom Seefurth. Formally known as Mamma Mia Pizza Beer, the brew will likely retail between $7.99 and $8.99 per 6-pack at stores including Binny’s Beverage Depot, he said. “The feedback I’m getting so far, it’s going to be gone fast,” Seefurth said. Seefurth’s creation was featured on the front page of the Chicago Tribune and garnered national attention (in the form of a joke at its expense on “The Tonight Show”) after brewing ten barrels for Walter Payton’s Roundhouse restaurant in Aurora. Under the slogan, “Beer so good ... it deserves a wine glass,” 500 cases will be brewed at Sand Creek Brewing Company in Black River Falls, Wis., Seefurth said. Ted Sullivan, the corporate beer buyer for Binny’s, said he agreed to stock the beer at the business’s 19 locations without even trying it. “It fits our clientele who are looking for something different,” Sullivan said. “I’d imagine the beer is pretty good. I know Tom and he is a beer geek like I am.” Seefurth said he has reached agreement with Franklin Park distributor Wein-Bauer, Inc. to distribute the first 500 cases. He said several restaurants and bars have also expressed interest in serving the beer, including a pizzeria in New York. |

Yip! I got to sample this one at the America's Brewing Co. (Walter Payton's Roundhouse) booth at the Great Taste of the Midwest. The garlic & oregano was really notable. Short's Brewing out of MI brought "The Bloody Beer" which was what they called an Imperial California Lager made with Roma tomatoes, fresh dill, horseradish, celery seed, & tellicherry peppercorns. I think this one would truly qualify as a kitchen sink beer! |

It sounds more like a kitchen sink drain beer to me. How about just eating a slice of pizza and drinking a more traditional beer along with it? |

Yeah, but chewing burns calories! We've got to watch our svelte physiques, or the chicks will stop diggin' us. |

Yikes. I wonder where they got such a positive response in that they think it's a good idea to put this on the market? I too got to try it at the Great Taste and I will agree, it tasted just like pizza. And it tasted just like something I personally would NEVER drink again. |

Yuk. Reminds me of another "beer" that has a very select audience... I saw cans of bud and bud light that are premixed with clamato juice. Man that's just nasty! |

Twelve-pack abs, Paul? Mine are more like a couple of 40s of malt liquor. |

I remember having something called a "red draw" someplace a number of years ago up in Wisconsin. It was basically a "bloody mary" sort of drink made with beer (a pale lager) & tomato juice mixed about 50/50 instead of a shot of vodka & tomato juice. With a shot of tobasco sauce, it wasn't bad at brunch. |
