I've been given the OK by the "chancellor of the exchequer" to convert my six-keg serving fridge into a four-tap kegerator. Courtesy of Tim Copeland, I have found a good Canadian and semi-local source for most of the equipment. However, they don't seem to have forward-seal faucets, and as long as I'm going to the trouble of this project I might as well do it right.

I've not paid a lot of attention to the comparison between the Perlick and Shirron (formerly VentMatic) forward-seal faucets. I notice that Northern Brewer stocks both and there is only a dollar's difference in the price between them. Is there a consensus that one is better than the other?

Bill,

There is a lot of "stuff" (opinions) out there on this issue. Please let me weigh in with mine.

Both faucets were invented by Brad Amidzich. The VentMatic is the latest edition and IMHO a far better product in machining, design and its adaptability in various applications. By that I mean it is far easier to control a pour with highly carbonated beers as well as those under normal carb ranges. A lot of this is accomplished with the changeable spouts.

This is a link to a document that I received from Brad a while ago. I made it into a PDF file for easier viewing. I think it will give you some more insight.
How I can get a better pour

I also have his full carb chart here:
VentMatic Carbonation

I hope this helps.

And I think there are often good deals on Ebay for the Shirron faucets.

Hey Bill,

Did you make a choice yet?

Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut and some others would have weighed in on this topic..

If you decide to go with the Vent-Matic, I know some of the additional spouts are impossible to get now. There are 7 different ones. I have a few sets and am willing to part with one - so if you decide to go this route, please send me an e-mail & we can talk this through. I also have some of the "Ultra-Pour Flo-Gate" Kits.

Waiting on you.. Just let me know..

Thanks much for the offer, Paul. Yes, I'm interested in the spouts, as I serve everything from highly carbed Belgians to low-carbed British ales. I'll send you an e-mail.

I'll probably buy the faucets in the next couple of weeks; I haven't had time to shop around since I posted the question yesterday.

Wishing you the best..

What Paul said . . .

I can attest to the spout difference . .It really makes a difference!

Just waiting for Connie to show up trying to extol the virtues of his Perlicks!

they speak for themselves
I still have three VentMatics ...in their box downstairs. Might use them someday, but I'm happy with the Perlicks, no adjustments needed.

Bill,
did you ask Simgo if they would special order them for you?
The el cheapo (cornielious I think) that I bought off them a few months ago seem to have been redesigned. And for 10 bucks, they work just fine for me. This is an area that I don't get too anal about...as long as the beer gets in the glass I am good

I got 4 Shirron's for Christmas and I must say I am thoroughly impressed with their craftsmanship. There are two things I have found that you need to know.

1. The Shirron's will not work with a threaded QD Faucet Adapter: http://morebeer.com/view_product/18286/102290

2. I have noticed that if I am pouring, I have to be careful not to open the tap all the way or it will agitate the beer. Pulling the handle about half-way works best. Has anyone else noticed this effect?
