Anyone happen to catch this over the weekend? I thought it was pretty good. Nothing much new in it for the average beer snob, but it might have stirred up some interest for a regular Joe who already likes craft beer but hasn't tried pairing it with food. The only truly funny one was the woman at Joe's Stone Crabs when she paired the crab legs with Corona. I understand the desire to pair a light lager with the crab so as to not override the crab flavor, but c'mon, couldn't she have picked something with SOME flavor? Greg Koch impressed me. He touted the Stone beers in the beginning of the show when they were comparing and contrasting styles, but when she came back at the end of the show and did pairings with him he actually used beer from other breweries. I thought that was pretty classy of him. It's on again tonight and tomorrow night if anyone wants to watch it. http://www.fineliving.com/fine/our_specials/episode/0,1663,FINE_5916_55751,00.ht ml |

Most of this seems intuitive to me at this point, so I usually don't pay much attention to such shows. I agree about the Corona. The only thing I could think of doing with it is boiling the crabs in it. As for what to drink with shellfish, I might suggest a Kolsch or summer ale on the lightly hopped side. |

I DVR'd this one, but haven't taken a look at it yet. Like you say, probably not much I don't already know, but I thought it might be interesting. |

Don't know, Vance. I'm curious if Fine Living is at all related to Southern Living. SL has a beer pairings story featured on their front page online this month. Again, nothing ground-breaking... |

Vance, Fine Living's website says they are on Alpharetta's Comcast channel 255. Pete, Fine Living is part of the HGTV/DIY/Food Network family, so I don't think they are tied in to Southern Living mag.... |

I had a Kirin Ichiban with some sushi (liberally wasabi'ed) tonight - an excellent pairing. |

I'll have to look at channel 255 sometime. I got sidetracked with St. Patty's and didn't get the dvr set to record. Maybe they'll re-run it sometime. |

I was at Stone Brewery in CA last year....sampled a few beers, had a nice (somewhat overpriced) lunch.....great venue in Escondido once you get through the car dealerships... Ran into Greg in the p*sser......he asked what I thought of food, beer, resturant....in general....cool guy trying to manage and grow a business, while maintaining some sort of integrity in what he was trying to do (how many of us can say we do that when we go work "for the man" everyday). I was impressed..... I contributed mightly to the gift shop after our meeting... (Compare this to the new Michelob ads running for "craft brew taste" in a new "craft brew selection...") Will direct my funds to those who support the "cause." Cheers. (Message edited by hoppop on March 20, 2008) |
