Greetings,
It will be that time of year soon where the Oktoberfests return. In Charlotte our fest will be on Sep 27th. I bought premium tickets that let me in an hour before the riff-raff. I was curious as to how I should prepare my body for a festival? Last year I didn't drink the day before and pushed a lot of fluids. The day of I had a small serving of pasta. As the day went on I started to feel full and was wondering if pasta was a bad idea. What regimen do you fellas adopt prior to a beer fest?
Thanks,
Peter 'the kid' Roman

As far as I'm concerned, a light breakfast is essential. Drinking heavily on an empty stomach is a very bad idea.

And it goes without saying that you need to arrange for transportation home from the fest.

I like a pretty good breakfast, but not heavy on grease (bacon, sausage, ham) before something like that. Before the Athen's beer fest we usually eat at a Cajun resturant and have one of their eggs benedict type offerings. Water in between beers is also a good idea.

I had a friend in college that used to drink an instant breakfast before a big night. Seemed to always work for him. YMMV

I find that protein works better than sugars and starches. That's true during the fest as well. And, as everyone agrees, lots of water. When I'm at a festival, I try to drink at least a little water after each beer and to stop and eat something at least once per hour. If I start to feel really full, it's probably a sign that I'm going too fast and will pay for it later.

I've also become quite brutal about dumping anything I'm not really happy drinking, even if they are only giving out tiny pours. I don't need either the calories or the buzz badly enough to finish so-so beers when better ones are handy. (Of course, I try not to do it right in front of the brewer.)

The best-run festivals have lots of dump buckets and free water easily available. I don't go back to ones which don't.

It is important that you arrive at beer fest sober.

I prepare by waking up in the morning and taking a dump. I then take the dog for a quick walk and pick up his poop in a plastic grocery bag. After I put the poo filled bag in a random neighbor's mailbox, I head home and get ready for breakfast. I usually put on some coffee, then make eggs over easy, and white toast for soppin' up the yolks. Mmmm Good! After I finish eating, I go upstairs, brush my teeth, then take a shower. After I get dressed, I get my keys and head out the door to drive to the Beer fest.

That's how I do it. But you may not have a dog.

Peter,

Hedgie here! I am sure we have met at either a CBM meeting or at Alternative Beverage... When is the Oktoberfest? Where? Where can I buy my tickets? (Preferably online...)

Thanks!

Hedgie

Funny stuff, Bob. I probably shouldn't distinguish this with a reply, but I'm wondering about the origin of the contents of the bag: from you or your dog?

Start drinking like a madman now so that you are in shape for the fest. All athletes train for their events.

Bob - I would think that a dump (doggie) or otherwise would work best on your hops plants!

Peter - As for the beer fest - Pace yourself son! Pace yourself!

I start my preparation for a beerfeest the day before by going to the beerfest. One day is never enough.

Pace yourself son! Pace yourself!

This makes me think of my HB club meetings (and beerfests as well) where I'm walking around with a glass (small tasting glass, of course) of someones' beer all night, constantly tasting and refilling with something else. It's easy to overdo it with so many beers to taste in an evening.

My ancestors would (so the legend goes) load up on cod liver oil before going on a bender. The fat from the oil would presumably "coat" the stomach and stagger the effects of the alcohol.

What all that cod liver oil might do to your palate is another matter altogether...

Hmmm, any mention in that legion about the "laxative properties" of all that cod liver oil?

Fellas,
I assumed after returning to HBD after a weekend that there would be some pretty funny replies. Bob probably gets a cookie for funniest post.
I appreciate the dietary information. I was interested to hear that protein works better that carbs. I'm going to attempt to pace myself however the 27th is the anniversary of my brother's passing so I'm sure I'll be sampling two at a time...
Thanks!

For sure. Keep the samples small, sip only a little at first, and don't hesitate to pour out anything you don't really like. You can always return for more of the beers you do.

If they don't serve food (very rare at an O'fest), bring your own snacks. A large bottle of water is also a good idea, both for hydration and cleaning your palate. It's not very difficult to construct a sling for keeping the bottle around your neck or shoulder.

By the way, I've heard nothing about the Great Taste of the Midwest last Saturday. How was it this year? The weekend was a wet one here in southern Ontario.
