As I mentioned in another thread, because I was asked to comment on my 10,000th post to this board, I will do so now. In truth, this is not really post number 10,000. In 2002 I was given moderator privileges by Pat Babcock, and for some reason the counter was reset (it was somewhere in the high 3000s at that point). Moreover, the board software didn't begin to count posts until an upgrade in late 1999 or early 2000. So it's anyone's true guess as to the real number. I believe Brews & Views goes back to 1996. At least it was late in that year that I became aware of it and started reading the posts. There was already a community of regulars who hung out here; occasionally I will see a name from those early days and smile in the comfort that I'm not the oldest hand among those here. Long before I homebrewed (although I knew homebrewers as early as 1970 and my father talked about Prohibition era brewing experiments) I considered writing a book. I was going to title it "For Every Man a Madness." It would have dealt with those (almost entirely male) who embrace hobbies to the point that they take over their lives. I probably realized I had the tendency to be among them. When I think of the influence of homebrewing on the past 15 years of my own life, it's frightening. The monetary cost (mostly opportunity costs compared to what else I might have done) is staggering. Yet I have to say if I had to do it over again, I would very likely do the same thing, including some of the obvious mistakes. Such is madness, I suppose. At any rate, I really want to thank many other people for the opportunity to post all those messages here. Pat Babcock and Karl Lutzen made the board possible; Pat continues in his dedication after all these years. Please continue to express your financial support to make it a going concern. Over time I've seen many names come and go, and made many fond friends. The sense of community is what keeps me coming back. We have our squabbles and disturbances, but we truly are a family. Furthermore, what I've learned here has been invaluable, and being able to share that is only fair. Whether there will be post 20,000 is anyone's guess. The numbers have dwindled in the past couple of years; there are many other forums and discussions and alternative technologies for expressing them. I've stayed here out of a sense that this is where I belong. All of you are the reason for that. Thank you everyone. In conclusion, all I can really say is---brew on! |

Bill, I am glad you have a sense of belonging. Although I value opinions from many on this board, I always look to see what you have to say as my final confirmation. Thanks for all of your advice. BV |

Bill, it's so cool to see you here still. I know my post count is very low. I mostly lurk anymore, and, don't contribute much, but, plan to in the future. The help I've received in a current active post regarding water is invaluable, and, just goes to show that I need to get involved again. I remember the very early days. Somewhere along the way, my post count went to zero. that was years ago. It is so cool that this board has such a valued member. Here's to you! Cheers, Jim |

Back in '99 - '00 when I started brewing I loved reading this board, due to the highly informative posts from Bill P and others. This has been a great resource for me over the years, although I confess to being mostly a lurker. Regardless, thanks to Bill and numerous others. |

Congrats, Bill. If I could find any decent beer here in southwest North Dakota, I'd raise a toast tonight. But since I can't, I'll toast to your accomplishment with homebrew tomorrow. |

Paul, I forgot you were temporarily in ND. In these recessionary times it has the distinction of the lowest unemployment rate of any state. Now if they only could see their way to improving the times with good beer. |

Here's to 10K+ more posts! Wish I'd discovered this and the hbd back in the 90's. When I started brewing in 93 there was a big information void around ATL. Finding this board and a local hbc forming in the early 2000's really helped my brewing. |

I think I might be the one who privately asked Bill to comment on his 10,000th post. I don't remember when I first started reading and posting on this board, but I had another Username back then, so my count is also unknown. What a great board this is. And Bill has provided so much with such grace and equanimity that it makes me proud to be associated with him in this small way. Folks like Chumley, Denny, Dan, and others are also major contributors whose input I value. Thanks, Bill, and everyone else who makes this board work. |

Madness it is....I have hit and missed this board since early 2002, and homebrewed since 1992. When I started, I was lucky to be in Seattle, which had a great craft brewing scene in infant stages...no shortages of HB knowledge. When I moved back to the SE, I hooked up here....great source of advice....and practical experience. Thanks, Bill for not only WHAT you answered for many on here, but HOW you answered it. Patience and many teachable moments. I know this is a Bill "10,000" post, but I want to also acknowledge Denny's input...my wife still has night tremors due to her finding me in the backyard attacking one end of a SS braided washer house with an axe a few years ago. |

Bill, I remember posting mostly on Rec.crafts.brewing back in the day, Brews & Views was my second "home" in the mid 90's. Then, early in the new century I discovered via Denny "tastybrew.com". I come back time and again to B&V's since starting up my cafe with the wife last year, I find myself posting less and less but, always check in on the forums to see what's going on. This is one of my regular stops and appreciate your contributions through the years. It was also a privilege meeting you a few years back in one of my favorite haunts that holds allot of history for craft beers including my own from the Shark's Tooth days along with Judy Ashworth in her Lyons Brewery of Dublin. She was a close personal friend of Michael Jackson. Kudos and cheers to the milestone you have achieved on whatever "real" numeric post that has transpired. edit to realize I was thinking of HBD newsletter in the mid 90's vice B&V's which I "switched over" to in '02 (Message edited by brewerbob on February 25, 2009) |

Bill, Thanks for your contributions both on and off this board. Before joining this forum I was a lurker and needed water help. I contacted you privately and received help from you that was just as specific and complete as you would give to someone posting on the forum. |

They're coming out of the woodwork to send thanks, so I should too. I discovered the HBD and quickly found it over my head. The B&V was more attractive, yet there was some animosity (I won't name names). Yet in every thread there was a balanced response. I began to read some posts for entertainment, but I always read Bill's earnest posts with interest. It was around that time I switched from extract to all-grain, and his responses were invaluable. Brew on, Bill. Your influence is incalculable. |

Thank you so much for your service to the collective these many years. I truly mean that, even though I still chuckle about a post I saw when I first arrived here, when signing in wasn't required. In response to a question, Bill Pearce replies, "Just do what I say." Funny stuff. |
