Hi.I just made a Coopers Fosters extract kit(pretty tasty by the way) and now im going to brew a Muntons IPA kit.Should I use the dry yeast that came with it?Should I pitch the wort on to the Coopers slurry,or should get a new yeast strain which I really dont want to do.(im cheap). Thanks! |

It's difficult to know the age of dry yeast that comes with the kits, as well as how it was handled (for maximum freshness yeast should be refrigerated). This is why many hionebrewers substitute yeast of known freshness. I'm not a fan of repitching dry yeast, although there have been reports of people doing it successfully. |

Mark, for an extract IPA I would suggest using US-05 dry, perhaps 2 packs if the OG > 1.060 for 5 Gallons. |

Do you think the Muntons yeast is garbage? |

The one under the lid of the can? Hard to tell, the thing is they are hit or miss. It maybe fine or it might not. And with the price of a package of dry yeast being $1.50 (Coopers) to $2.75 (Mutons Gold) why risk it? FYI these are the prices at my LHBS. |

You can pretty much bet that the packet under the lid has never been refigerated. My lhbs keeps even their dry yeast refiegerated. Don't know how it's stored before they get it though. |
