Does anyone have any experience with editing video files?

I just bought one of those snazzy Sony Handycams that has no removable media. It simply has a 60 GIG internal hard drive and you can save your videos to computer or straight to DVD.

What I am trying to do is compress a .mpg file that is stored on my computer so I can post it on YouTube. The file is 298 MEG and YouTube has a 100 MEG limit.

I have Nero 7 and I can't find any utilities to do this. I also have tried using Windows Movie Maker, but every time I try to import the file into the app, it crashes the app.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Bob

There may be some free software to do this, but I don't know about any.

The pro version of Apple Quicktime has fairly extensive options for video editing and compressing, though. Not especially expensive either.

Bob, I could swear there is a compression tool in Window Media Player for video, but I can't find it now.

I bought a Pinnacle Systems Dazzle Video Converter to pull stuff from the analog video camera to the PC. The Pinnacle Studio software that came with it has all kinds of compression tools. I think the converter I bought was under $40 at BB....

I tried Nero, Windows Media player, Windows Movie Maker, Real Player, and Quicktime. None have what I am looking for.

This is vexing. You'd think it would be a simple function of any media player.

You might try this DVD Shrink which you can find at this site.

I'm not positive that it works on .mpg files, but it works great on most DVDs and it is freeware.

I have used DVD shrink but I don't think it will change the video format.

I use Ulead Video Studio to edit and render video. It will "output" video in many different formats. You can download a 30 day free trial to see if it will work for you.

DVD Shrink did not do the trick. I have an old Army buddy who is into video production. he offered to re-size the file. I am going to send him a copy.

Thanks for the help though

Bob - The Ulead Video Studio will work for you. It will "chrunch" your video and provide numerous types of output files...like for "you tube", cellular video, iPod type video, DVD, HD-DVD, video CD, etc.

Download the 30 day trial for free.

Ok guys. I feel pretty silly now. My old Army buddy pointed out that Google Video does not have the same size restrictions as YouTube.

I have posted the video.

Enjoy:
