Food for thought - if you haven't already decided who you are voting for. http://tinyurl.com/3jkx4b |

Just more one sided propaganda. What ever happened to the Republican mantra of the "Ownership Society?" |

What is the other side? Please enlighten me. Congress forced lenders to make high risk loans. Financial writers and observers pointed out that this was a risky policy. Congress continued to say "There's no problem". Till now. Those responsible in Congress should be charged with malfeasance. (Message edited by stevepierson on October 02, 2008) |

By the tone "Those responsible in Congress" were all Democrats. The Republicans had to be dragged kicking and screaming. Please give me a break . . . Remember Bush was real big on "the ownership society." That means something. |

Your inference, sir. I think that all those responsible in Congress should be prosecuted. Republicans, Democrats, etc. |

Thanks, Ron. I've been reading this board for several weeks. I think I've got the lay of the land here. My statement stands - prosecute all those responsible in Congress - Republican, Democrat, etc. Seems to me that's pretty fair and balanced. |

"My statement stands - prosecute all those responsible in Congress - Republican, Democrat, etc. Seems to me that's pretty fair and balanced." I certainly have no trouble with that, but was the spiel truly "fair and balanced?" |

The most damning evidence in the video is the members of Congress in their own words - is that unfair? |

It the scenes were cherrypicked to blame one party, it was unfair. |

Dan, you make accusations without any basis in fact. You use assumptions just like you did on this thread. You accused Steve of being biased without even having the decency of at least asking him before you hurled the accusation at him. Once he cleared it up for him, you are not even man enough to admit that you might have been wrong and apologize. Do you have any decency left? |

Sorry you feel that way Ron. If you are blind to the huge bias of that clip, there is nothing I or anyone else can to for you. |

Dan, please share what evidence you have about others who were involved in this scam. Republicans, Democrats, etc. As I said, prosecute them all. |

Barney Frank as late as July was saying that Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac were in a good position and were going to get stronger. Did anyone invest any money in either of these two entities in July? If so, you will have a real nice capital loss to claim come 4/15. |

From Dennys link: The U.S. economy is enormously complicated. Screwing it up takes a great deal of cooperation. That is priceless! And very accurate, unfortunately. |

Thanks, Denny. Great link - I will be spending (wasting) some time there over the next few weeks. And as I thought, plenty of blame to go around. A pox on all their houses ... |

Fact Check rules, I was introduced to it during the '04 election and I've been a regular reader since then. I always look forward to the Friday "Just the Facts and Ask FactCheck" emails. You can subscribe here: http://www.factcheck.org/subscribe/ Denny, I had not seen the link you posted though. That's the best non-partisan explanation I've seen yet. Remember when the newspapers used to actually "report" like that instead of pushing an agenda? Ahhhh...the good old days.... |

That is a great resource. It is a source that all concerned can agree is just delivering raw facts, as opposed to politically biased "truths". It is not the end of partisan politics. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it may be the end of the beginning. To paraphrase the great quotemaster. I freely admit that I (maybe subconsciously) seek out news sources that validate my preconceived world views (The NY Times application occupies the probably most-frequently pressed spot on my iPod Touch), and it is really refreshing to be confronted with the raw facts of any given matter. It makes you think, as opposed to just beating your chest. |

I'm going to beat my chest here a little bit. To be clear, I do still think the fault lies more so with consumers who got in over their heads, but the enabling in this video is pretty damning. I know Obama has been hit with evidence of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lobbyists giving money to his campaign, so you gotta wonder how much all of these Dems have gotten over the years, because to defend those entities in spite of having the facts laid out before them is unbelievable. They were warned point blank and not only did they not heed the warnings, they called the warnings lies and attacks on Frank Raines. Unreal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs |

Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac--and lots of other companies--were flush with money during the boom and spread it widely among politicians of both parties. They hedged their investments (like any savvy trader) by making sure the contributions went to both sides of the aisle. The list of recipients includes almost everyone with influence in Washington. McCain once understood this and tried with some effort to control the money that is the mother's milk of politics. But in the end it was bigger than him--and just about everyone else. |
