Hiya guys, just moved and my glass brewing thermo. didn't survive the trip. I've got a 12" stem type that is notoriously unreliable (every bump seems to send it 5 deg off). I had bookmarked a website for a scientific company that sold thermometers that Bill P. and a few others recommended from personal expercience but I can't find it now (seems it started with a w or y or something). Any help or recommendations for a digital type thermometer w probe would be appreciated.

Walmart sells a digiatl for about $12 that is amazingly accurate. I hate going in to Walmart, but couldn't pass that one up. I checked it against my lab calibration thermo, and it was within .5 F. |

BTW Denny, I too am lining up the ingredients to do your RyePA, gonna be in my next whirlwind 4brews-1weekend session coming up in coupla weeks. Finally got the whole "gotta formulate my OWN recipes" thing outta my system and now I'm gonna see if I can "not-screw-up" somebody else's. . . |

Lots of uses. I just stick it into the mash and set the box outside of it. You just can't stick the probe under water.

That's a nice looking one, Ken...man, that sounds like B&B, too, doesn't it? When you say you can't stick the probe under water, do you mean it's OK to put it in water up to the probe/cable junction? |

These relatively inexpensive kitchen remote digital thermometers have a habit of failing at inopportune moments. As Ken mentions, the probe is not waterproof and will eventually give highly erratic readings if operated for any length of time in a damp environment. |

Hey guys I solve that problem by buying heatshrink conduit from a H*** Depoit. Its now waterproof and still cheap!

I did cob my probe up once by getting the cable wet where it meets the probe, but once it dried out it seemed to be fine. John, I've thought about the heat-shrink thing before. Did you overlap them, putting them on one at a time and working your way up the cable? Probably made it a bit of a stiffy, but who cares! I gotta try that.

Yeah I overlapped them and it has a stiffie , but I dont worry about getting the braid wet. I also can throw it in the carboy to get a good read while fermenting

I've got the yellow one that Connie listed the link for. It's great! I've never had a problem with it. Unlike the el cheapo one, which died not long after I bought it. Now, it's a glorified timer, because that is the only thing that works on it. |
