My local supermarket just got this new beer in. Comes in a flask-shaped bottle. Anyone tried it? |

Yes - I have tried two. I honestly thought both had gone bad. It's a mix of old ale and pale ale to make an old style porter. Pretty bottle - not a good taste. Maybe mine were just bad and northwest porters have spoiled me. Travis |

There's a sourness that's inherent to this beer as one of the blended beers is an old/aged beer. Not a bad porter, but I've had better. |

I kind of liked it - found it to be a nice, smooth mellow porter with a clean roastiness. Though I have to say that I haven't been particularly impressed with the other St. Peter's offerings that are available, like their Golden Ale. I just had the other night an Utenos Porter. I found it to be very mellow compared to other Baltic Porters, but still had that nice licorice flavor. On the subject of smooth porters, my 1.062 slightly tweaked version of BP's St. Chucks Porter finally appears to be done fermenting, although it ended up at 1.020 - right at the end of the WY1728 attenuation rate (68%). I can't decide whether to bottle it so it will last longer, or just to keg it. I know if I keg it, it will not survive the NFL playoff season. |

Where is this St. Chuck's Porter recipe that I keep seeing mentioned? |

chumley, send me the keg, then when NFL season is over, I'll send whatever is left back to you. I'll only drink it as long as the Colts are still playing. Not sure the Indianapolis Colts will be playing past next weekend. Broncos are coming to town, and they whupped the Colts just last week |

Jim, I just tried this beer, I have one in front of me now. I don't get a sourness like some of the other guys said. Has a nice roastiness, maybe a little smoke. If it's an old style porter, it would have a smoke flavor because the malt would have been kilned over an open/wood fire. But back in the 1700's, the beer would have a sourness because nobody knew about sanitation, and like someone mentioned, it could have been blended with "stale" beer. Ray Daniels DGB book describes the practice of blending old and new beer. |
