Cleaning out a closet yesterday, found a sack with about 3 lbs. chocolate malt ( not crushed ). I think it may be 3 or 4 years old. Would you use it? I may need to get Promash to record inventory. |

I'd guess you could taste it side-by-side with some fresh chocolate malt and see what you think Maybe a blind triangle test? Hehe... For to accuse requires less eloquence, such is man's nature, than to excuse; and condemnation, than absolution, more resembles justice. -Hobbes, Leviathan

Some Belgian beers use aged hops, why not make an Old Ale with some old malt? |

I never throw anything out unless it's obviously bad. (fuzzy stuff, wiggly things, or turded . . even then there has to be a certain density of turdage ) May not use in anything you want to enter in a competition, but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts you could make something quite drinkable. |

I use malt that old all the time, but I live in a semi-arid climate. I would be more suspicious if I lived somewhere humid. |

I live in the humid North East an can keep malts for years if handled properly. Most of the malt I keep is in plastic air tight bags. An left in a cool dry place. Due to an order mix up I ended up with 6 lbs of Morovian chocolate malt. That was 5 years ago an I still use it in dark beers with no bad tastes so far. I've often wondered how long specialty malts can last? |
