Spirit of Belgium Conference Impressions: Held in Arlington, VA and hosted by BURP, this was a great conference. (Saw Joe Alf from HBD.) Very easygoing environment where you could talk to speakers at receptions. The presentations were excellent and the selection of tastes amazing. Favorite tastes - Tomme Arthur's Cuvee is really interesting. Its hard to call it beer. Wonderful acidity and oak flavors. -Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River had an all Brett fermented beer that was a good reference point for all the discussion of fermenting with wild yeast. - McKenzie Brew House of Chadds Ford, PA has a really nice Biere de Guard. What was really cool was to sample it with Steve Markowski and discuss his book. -Cantillon Organic Gueuze was really intense ... not in Kansas anymore kind of experience. Also a good reference point for wild yeast and bacteria flavors. Many thanks to the BURP organizers for a great conference. Joel Gallihue Columbia, MD |
