Bill, I'm writing a brief note about calculating Ideal SRM for my monthly newsletter (giving your BYO article as the source and recommending buying the issue). But there's one thing I'm not clear on. Is the formula 0.14 * RA + 5.2 to be calculated as (0.14*RA)+5.2? Or is it 0.14*(RA+5.2)? You get quite different results depending on how you do the math. For example (014*100)+5.2= 19.2 while 0.14*(100+5.2)= 14.7 Thanks for your help. Greg Beron Culver City Home Brewing Supply www.brewsupply.com

According to my distant memories of basic mathematics, * has priority over +, so it would be "(0.14*RA)+5.2". |

Hophead is correct. Multiplication, division, roots, and exponentials first followed by addition and subtraction. |

It's crystal clear now! Is that an SRM = 0? |

Yep, in the absence of parenthesis, multiplication and division take precendence over addition and subtraction. Chris Colby Bastrop, TX |

Thanks to all. My initial assumption was that the multiplication should come first, but I thought I'd better double-check. Greg Beron Culver City Home Brewing Supply www.brewsupply.com
