I'm not a big Lambic fan, but I know many posters here are. This article was in CAMRA's January 'What's Brewing' Closure Threat: The Cantillon Brewery in Brussels, one of the most celebrated producers of Lambic and Gueueze beers may well be forced to close. Owners the Van Roys look likely to be driven out of the rough Anderlecht suburb by theives. The last straw appears to be an armed raid where a knife was held to the throat of the brewer's wife while 1,000 Euros were stolen. |

Speaking from experience of going to the brewery - It is not in a safe part of town. Although i wasn't personally threatened I can see that the potential for crime is high. Can't blame them. To be honest though some of the best beer places in brussels are in crappy parts of town. "If I'm not supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?"

This is a new one. It's difficult to think of Brussels as a truly dangerous city. A few years ago it took a special exemption from EU health regulations to allow lambic breweries to continue their traditional methods, but that was the last threat I was aware of. |

Bill - I wasn't saying that all of brussels is dangerous - in fact it is the opposite. However Cantilion is in a corner of the city that is not heavily traveled by tourists and as such there is not much of a police presence as you would find in the Grand Place or other heavy tourist laden areas. I'll be honest I was a bit apprehensive when visiting cantilion because I was carting my infant son around with me at the time and I am not intimidated easily. The other place i truely felt a little aprehensive was trying to find 400 beers artisonales. Although just outside a touristy area it was not in what i would call a safe part of the city. Just my opinion. Maybe i have become soft since my son was born. "If I'm not supposed to eat animals, why are they made out of meat?"

When we visited Cantillon in 1995, we also felt that Anderlecht wasn't the safest part of town. We were there on a Saturday morning, but we still were looking over our shoulders while walking to and from the metro. It's definitely not a touristy area. OTOH, just a few blocks from Cantillon, we stopped by a Saturday farmers market, and were greeted warmly by everyone. The rest of Brussels seemed relatively easy-going the two or three days we stayed in town. (Message edited by pedwards on January 26, 2007) |

I was there in August, it would be too bad if they had to close. |

Breweries are usually in bad parts of town - they have the most lax regulations, cheapest rent/lease, yadda, yadda...ever been to Sam Adams in Jamaica Plain, Boston? Better yet, ever had to carry a case of SA Double Bock (plus a box of other free swag for judging a comp) through Jamaica Plain to the train station to get to your hotel? Not fun. That said, I volunteer to personally become Cantillon's night watchman. Just leave me a glass and the keys to the cooler. I'll live out of the back of my truck. |

There was mention a couple of years ago about Anchor's neighbors in their increasingly gentrified San Francisco neighborhood complaining about the noise and odor from the brewery. Myself, I love the smell of hops in the morning... |

Smells like...victory. For to accuse requires less eloquence, such is man's nature, than to excuse; and condemnation, than absolution, more resembles justice. -Hobbes, Leviathan

I never heard of anyone complaining about the smell coming from Victory.

Sounds like this Cantillon thing was more to stir up a response. http://www.babblebelt.com/bbb_classic/readarc.html?id=1166483456 |
