i had planned an all grain alt brew tonight but now won't have time for an all grain session. i have 8 lbs of alexanders extract i won at state fair comp, a good selection of various crystals, choclate and hop types and a ready starter of 1338 yeast. give me some ideas, what sounds good to you? not a big fan of west coast hop monsters

Conserve your hops and make Scottish ale.

was thinking of maybe staying with sticke alt idea, how bout 8 lbs extract, then steep 1 lb crystal 65, 1/4 chocolate, 1/2 caramunich, 3 ounces of 4% mt hoods at 60 minutes, no flavor or aroma hops

I wouldn't waste 3oz of mt hoods for bittering only if you have a higher AA hop available... I'd use some for a flavor addition though too... :-)

Dan, AFAIAC that's false economy. I want to brew what I want to brew. Yeah, I may regret that in a year or so when things are worse than they are now, but it's a HOBBY dammit!

Drop the 1 pound of C65, reduce the chocolate to 2 oz. and you're good to go. And I'd follow HH's recommendation to use a higher AA bittering hop (if you have a clean one like Magnum) and throw an oz. or so of those Mt. Hood in as a flavor addition.

The first thing I thought of with 1338 was an Alt. I agree with davidw - drop the crystal (or maybe reduce to just a few ounces) and use a higher alpha for the bittering - to about 45 ibu or so.

Make a Stout or porter with only bittering hops.Use plenty of dark malts to cover up the horrid extract flavour.
