Friday morning I'll be driving through the south Chicago suburbs on I-80 on my way to Iowa. I'd love to make a detour downtown to Sam's to stock up on great beers, but I just don't have the time. Can someone suggest a store with a good beer selection that is not too far out of my way? |

Binny's Beverage Depot Orland Park 103A Orland Park Place Orland Park, IL 60462 Exit LaGrange Rd (IL45) North. It's 2 miles off of I-80. |

Bill, to give you an idea of their selection, I typed "wheat" into their search engine. 78 results came back. Tell that to your socialist/communist Canuckistanian beer monopoly. |

Thanks greatly, Kevin. I should have known there was a Binny's in the south suburbs. That's certainly easy enough for me to get to, and infinitely quicker than the Dan Ryan and Stevenson expressways on a summer Friday. I often stop and have dinner at Flossmoor Station on the return trip. The Iowa bike ride is south this year and I'm going to try to avoid Chicagoland altogether on the way back home. There has been talk about a far south Chicago bypass for as long as I've been alive (and I'm no spring chicken, that's for sure), but it's never come to pass. You'd think the truck lobby would have been more powerful during all those years. (Message edited by BillPierce on July 14, 2009) |

I find Binny's selection to be spotty from location to location. Each store manager manages the stock so they can tailor to the clientèle. While the corporate website carries all those brands it is not always the case at the stores. |

Good point, Paul. Bill you might want to call ahead if there's something specific you want. Two days isn't enough time for them to get it for you, but at least you won't waste time searching the shelves for something they don't stock. |

I also pass close to my second favorite (after Sam's) retail beer store, Merchant's Wines in Dearborn, near Detroit. Unfortunately it may be during the hours they are closed. Additionally, I could stop at John's Grocery in Iowa City, which has a very good selection. So if Binny's in Orland Park doesn't fulfill my expectations, there are alternatives. So many beers, so little time... |

You could also swing through Hammond IN and stop at Three Floyds. I think I may do that next week while I'm in Chicago for a Seminar. PTA :P (Message edited by palerthanale on July 15, 2009) |

Or a stop at Bells Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo. Unfortunately I'm driving, and a goodly distance at that. |

Bill, Binny's has a 15% off everything in the store coupon, but it's only good Saturday and Sunday. Maybe on your way back? You'll have to sign up for a Binny's Card (member card, not credit card--no fee), and use the following coupon: http://www.binnys.com/images/coupons/coupon071809.gif |

Thanks, Kevin. I may have to reroute myself through the Chicago area on the return trip. |

Bill, Be sure to stop by the Team Good Brew bus during your ride. It sounds like they will have several great beers on tap this year. A few of the team members are homebrewers and may have a stash or two of the real good stuff if you ask nicely! |

Thanks, Spiked Helmet. I've seen the t-shirts for Team Good Brew in previous years. I should have guessed there would be homebrewers among them. Our club (Team Sprint) drinks homebrew and craft beer at our campsites. I'm bringing a corny keg each of St. Chuck's Porter and my Give 'em Helles, and we'll also have kegs from the Great Dane in Madison as well as one of St. Bernardus Abt 12. As I say, beer and biking...they go together for me. |

Bill, Sounds like fun. I did make a mistake on their name...it is Team Good BEER. I'll have the guys look for you. Good Biking! |
