I am ending this year pretty much as I lived it: overworked. It is 3:30am and I am just finishing my work for the day. But it is my last workday of 2009 and so I am bidding good riddance to this year. I am ready to hoist a few tomorrow to celebrate its passing. Off PA tomorrow morning to party with old friends. Enjoy your New Years festivities everyone. See you all after the holiday. |

I'm home on New Year's Eve, with my wife and her elderly (85 and 78) parents who are not up to going out. The kids are attending an overnight party (chaperoned by a friend's parents). We had beer at Christmas, so I've agreed to let wine be the beverage for tonight, including a 10-year-old sparkling mead of my own making. Here's to 2010 giving us more of what matters to our souls and less of what doesn't. Cheers! |

Feliz Ano Nuevo! We'll be down at the jardin in front of the Parroquia with crowds of others waving gigante sparklers in the air to the music. The beer? Most likely one of Modelo's offerings. See you in 2010! mark www.backyardbrewer.blogspot.com www.thebackyardbrewer.com |

Steve, Drunk Uncle Dunkel is the best name of the year. I have a drunk uncle who speaks fondly of Dunkel. Recipe please? Oh, and Happy New Year! |

Drunk Uncle Dunkel is my feeble attempt to clone Budvar dark - I still have fond memories of quaffing that beer in Prague. It is more bitter than a munich dunkel. OG: 1.052 IBU: 30 Grain bill: 6# pilsener malt (I use Rahr) 4.5 # munich malt (I use Weyermann) 0.6 # Weyermann Caramunich I 0.3 # Weyermann Carafa I Single infusion mash @ 148F for 60 min. Add Carafa to mash 5-10 minutes before you start sparge 90 min boil 60 min: 1.1 oz Mt Hood 30 min: 1.1 oz Mt Hood Wyeast 2206 Ferment @ 49-51F for minimum of 3 weeks. Lager @ 35-40F for 1 month |

I, too, am already back at work. I need to put in about 6 hours before a 9:00am conference call tomorrow. Don't get me wrong; I am grateful for the work. I know that not every freelancer can complain of over-work in this economy. But my #1 New Years resolution is to manage client expectations better so that I'm working no more than 50 - 55 hrs per week. Enough is enough. I did take 3 days off for the holiday. Rang in the new year with my own mead rather than cheap champagne, with friends in PA. Came home to find a bottle of Ardbeg on the porch, the gift of a client grateful for my extra effort. Life could be MUCH worse. |
