And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

Brewing beer has been mostly a solitary endeavor, with various domestic chores worked in during mash rests and boiling. It’s usually the drinking that’s the social part. And even though I enjoy my quiet Sunday brews, some great times and great ideas come out of brewing with friends.

Last Sunday Kent and I had a chance to stand in on a brew session at Denny Conn’s place in the country. Denny has a new concrete floor in his brew house – with a floor drain. Dan Shultz from Oregon Brew Crew was there. Dan hauled his system down from Portland to brew the now legendary recipe “Sister Star of the Sun”, formulated by Dave Brockington back in the 1980’s. This beer has 174 IBU’s! Dan is a gadget wizard. Check out some of his inventions on the gadget page of the Oregon Brew Crew’s website or use the link to Dan’s web page on the CBS website. A couple of other good ideas I took home with me were batch sparging and the “Wort Wizard”. See the wort wizard in action on Big Brew Day, May 3rd at Denny’s place. Check the CBS website for a new addition. Denny is going to start a recipe page and should have this up by the time this letter’s out. See you at the Saint Paddy's Day party in March.   RC

And Now a Word from President Kent Macdonald:

Imagine yourself sitting back, enjoying your favorite ale and dreaming of that little brewing area you so desire.  Mostly because your wife has 86’ed your sorry butt out of the kitchen.  Your vision is a small place in some remote area of the garage or out back in the shed.   Nothing elaborate, just a nice little brewing spot to call your own....Then you go to a meeting at Russ and Amber's, feast your eyes on that "little" brewery and oh yeah  does the dream change!

Thank you Russ for an excellent presentation on yeast management, I learned a lot. Thanks as well for the 6 beers and ciders on tap and the supply of munchies. (This might be a good time to remind everyone that we all are supposed to bring beer and munchies to the meetings.  It is not the responsibility of the host to furnish them for everyone. Thanks.)

We saw many new faces at the meeting and I want to welcome them into the club, the new members are:  Liz Laughlin, Mike Blackmore, Phillip McKinney, David Pierce, Thomas Bettellyoun, Amy and Joseph Sullivan, and Brent Weaver. This bring our membership up to 57 strong. YEAH!

As a volunteer pourer (21 & older) you receive free admission (for both days) to the event.  And though you are welcome to come before or stay after your shift, you are not allowed (by law) to drink prior to or during your shift. The shifts available are as follows:

If you want to enter the competition, you can drop off your entries at Willamette Vintner & Brew (ex-Willamette Street Homebrew).

A new Style night is coming! In addition to the Koelsch night in late summer, we want to have some more of these during the year. Up next is Stout night slated for the March meeting. Fire up those kettles!

Big Brew 2003 will be here before you know it! It is always the first weekend in May. Stay tuned for further details. See Denny Conn (site coordinator) for more information.

Other News: Congrats to Jerry & Lori Liudahl for their big win at the Florence Winter Folks Fest competition!!! Their pale ale scored 40 points! They were one of three category winners and received a free can of extract and a personally autographed copy of “How To Brew” by John Palmer.
