Whats’s New:
Wow, the Charlie Papazian event went very well. Everyone did a great job. Thanks to everyone who helped. Charlie was impressed with how well everything went. People brought great beer and plenty of it. The band was awesome. John Crider, the keyboardist, is getting well-known around the area, and we were blessed to have him with his band. Look for upcoming events by John in the Ticket section of the Register Guard.
Many thanks to Kent and Janie for hosting a well-attended
meeting. Kent did a great job
demonstrating the Pro Mash brewing software.
Someone could spend hours talking about all the features--the program
only continues to improve. As usual,
the gardens looked great and Janie had lots of good food. Dean brought a really cool coffee roaster
that he bought out of a brewing catalog.
Beer and coffee; what a great combination. Anyway, he roasted up some beans in about ten minutes and brewed
up some fine coffee. Could we see a new
trend? Cont’ on back

As I sit here in front of the computer having just brewed a hoppy pale ale, I think about what a great time it is to be a brewer. With two great home brew shops in the area, five commercial breweries, and the vast experience this club has, I really feel there is nothing we can’t do.
It makes me realize that there are great ideas brewing out there among the membership. Some of you have brought them up at meetings. Here are a few ideas to get things going:
· With summer coming up, we can do our annual club brew to help bring some of the new members in. Maybe someone could even do an extract brew. Anyone remember how to do that?
· Some of the local brewers have offered to host events. Many people would rather come to a pub than someone’s house.
· It would be something for next year, but we can do another event at the Wild Duck. I’m sure we could get a guest speaker. Any ideas?
Whatever we do, we need to bring in more new members. The home brew shops have been great at informing their customers about the club. People have been calling to get more information.
One last thing on a sad note: Chuck Link has been diagnosed with lymphoma. Chuck is one of our most beloved members and is an outstanding brewer. If you would like to send anything ( he can drink beer) send to his address:

From the Brewpot:
This month’s brew is an extract version of Orkney Brewery’s Skull Splitter. For 5 gallons:
Crush and steep the following:
1# 55deg L crystal
1/3# Belgian aromatic malt
2oz. Roast barley
1oz. Peat-smoked malt
Add:
4# light DME
1# wheat DME
6# light malt syrup
Bring to boil and add:
2oz Kent Goldings hops for 1hr.
After 45min add 1tsp of Irish moss.
Cool and pitch with either Wyeast 1084 or 1728.
Add ¼ oz steamed oak chips into the secondary fermentor.
Bottle with dry wheat malt extract when fermentation is complete.
All Grain version: Use 15# 2-row and ½# wheat malt in place of extracts. Use the same specialty malts. Use approximately 1/3 less hops in boil.
