 September 2002

Next Meetings:

The Annual Hop Ride and Hop Maddness Festival is August 31st (see last newsletter for more information).

Well, It's chili cook off time again.  Mark and Rose will be hosting the annual event this year.  We have had some world class chili in years past so bring your best chili, homebrewed beer, and an extra set of taste buds.  We will need judges so if you don't enter you may need to judge.  This is the scoop on how the chili will be judged.  Fine chili should look good, smell good, and taste good.  Each cup will be judged on 5 criteria to arrive at one whole number score of 0 to 10.  Highest total score is 50.  The five criteria are, aroma, red color, consistency, taste, and aftertaste.  The judges are not to  discuss the chili until after judging is complete.  This is a fun event to enter or judge so bring chili, and bring a friend.  The prizes will be well worth it.  Event will be at 1232 Dalton Dr.  461-6779.  Starts at 6:30 on Saturday Sept. 14th.

And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

For those folks who never found Greg Bolt’s place be assured we had a very good time. Sorry we were late Greg and thanks for hosting the event.  We’ll take our maps next time.  We had a good range of commercial pilsners with a surprising variation of flavors.

Thanks to all those volunteer judges and organizers who helped pull off another beer judging event at the Lane County Fair this year.  This is an important opportunity for us to support local home brewing and we hope to make it a BJCP sanctioned event sometime in the future.  That way certified judges can be credited for participation (see below for BJCP) .

Don’t miss the hop ride.  It’s a shorter ride this year so as to give us plenty of time for a tour of a working hop farm and partying at the hop festival later.  If you still need a copy of Chris Studach’s map and info sheet give me a call at 342-2397. See you there!

Beer Judging and BJCP Certification
