And Now a Word from President Robin Chitwood:

September 24, 2003

The Willamette Valley hop harvest is pretty much complete for this year. You can see across the fields again, through the poles and wires. Next year’s vines are hugging the ground. The Willamette Valley is the biggest hop producer in the United States, with Washington’s Yakima Valley running a close second. A home brewer could easily collect enough hops to brew for a year just by picking up those that fall off the trucks around the hop yards.

The Hop Madness Festival was a huge success. Club members from Cascade Brewers, Oregon Brew Crew, Strange Brew, Heart of the Valley and others made up most of the eighty some hop lovers who joined the festivities. A good time was had by all; such a good time in fact that only a couple of cyclists emerged from their tents Sunday morning for the planned bike tour. Beer was brewed, beer was consumed and a mystery remains unsolved. A hop truck rolled into camp sometime during the night, borrowed from one of the local hop yards. It sat there the next morning, empty, surrounded by policemen. The homebrew clubs had nothing to do with this. That’s our story and we’re sticking to it. Thanks to Denny Conn, Matt Jarvis, Rob Hudson, Dan Schultz and others who helped to make this year’s festival a success.

Election of officers for 2004 will be held in December this year. If you want to nominate someone or run for office yourself, please tell one of the current officers. We need to find a diligent and responsible person to replace Janie as club treasurer. She has served dutifully for a long time but would like to get back to her gardening. If you have some bookkeeping skills please consider giving the club a hand for a while.

I expect to taste a some very good homebrew at the Oktoberfest party. See you all there. Cheers, RC.
