And Now a Word from President Nate Sampson:
October 2006
The temperature may be dropping but the activity level of
the CBS definitely is not.
There are a lot of events still planned throughout the rest
of the year. But first, a quick recap of events passed....
The Oktoberfest held at the Kazmierczak’s had a great turn
out and the food was outstanding. The 1st annual Iron Brewer competition beers
were also judged at the fest. The entries were Mitch Scheele & Curt Hausum
with a Baltic Porter, Matt Jarvis & Molly Finlayson with an Old Ale, and
Tom Fries & Nate Sampson with an Old Ale.
The judging was conducted by peoples’ choice for which brew
they liked best. Believe it or not it was a three way tie (Ed: Scam!!!). The
tie-breaker was decided by Brett, and he simply choose the can he thought was
the coolest. So, the winner of the peoples choice was Tom & Nate (Ed: It
was rigged I tell ya!!!). There was also a more formal judged session. The
winner of that, believe it or not, was Matt & Molly (Ed: but of course!!).
But in the end, we were all winners. Thanks to the Kaz’s for putting that on.
(Ed: Amen!!)
The September installment of the Club Only Competition was
held at Kevin & Pam McGraw’s place. The theme was Bock’s. That included
traditional bock, dopplebock, maibock/helles, and eisbock. The winners of the
were Russ with 3rd , (luser) Mitch S. with 2nd,
(semi-luser) and of course, Nate (total dork) heading up the pack with the
first place entry. This leaves only one more C.O.C. left for the year. That
will be November 11th at the Chili Cook-off which will be at Mark
& Rose Smith’s. The theme will be stouts and porters. That includes Imperial
versions as well.
Coming up in October is the annual Jubel ale fest at Mark
& Rose Smith’s place. More details to come. That will be held on Saturday
Oct. 21st. So plan accordingly.
The following weekend on Saturday 28th Scot &
Tina Ellison are hosting the Halloween party. Here is a bit about the
festivities from the Ellison clan:
“Come all to the Ellison home for a fun, freaky, friend
filled evening! October 28 starting at 6:00 p.m. 589 Brookdale Avenue, Springfield. This will be potluck style,
ya’ll know the drill. Bring homebrew or whatever you’re wanting. We’ll be
cooking some sort of meat, haven’t quite decided yet. Costumes are always encouraged but never required, some of us are
scary enough! Hope to see you there! Scott & Tina 726-1435 “
Then leading into November:
Teach a Friend to Brew Day is Sat. Nov. 4 and Denny will be
hosting a brew
at his place once again. Setup starts at 9 AM. There are a few
spots left
open, so if you want to brew, contact Denny denny@projectoneaudio.com
as soon as possible. Whether you brew or not, come on
out and bring a friend who's interested in brewing, along with some food and
beer. BBQ will be available for those
who want to use it! And bring your checkbook and sign up for the AHA or
renew your membership.
Also, since we’re on the subject, Denny has finally received
his BJCP National Certification. That makes 2 of them in the club.
Brew on,
N8
Other news:
Other
Fun (by m.jarvis):
Greg
hosted a Happy Hour on Oct 6th at his place for an inventory
reduction, and as hard as we tried I don’t think Nate, Greg, Russ and his dad,
John and myself really made much of a dent.... it wasn’t for a lack of trying
though... ;) Show up next time since Greg is brewing some really great beers!!
Russ
hosted an impromptu fruit pressing at his place on Oct 8th....
several of us showed up with the goods and we all had a great time pressing....
We put out about 30 gallons of cider.... Chris brought some French and English
ciders for sampling, and we forced down some of Russ’s beers, so it was a
labour of love made easy....
