The Downriver Brewers Guild was established in 1995 by a group of home brewers who wanted to share their knowledge of brewing with each other and newcomers to the hobby. The club was made up of mostly novices who wish to learn how to improve their beer, with a few more experienced members always on hand to offer advice. The DBG has matured into a solid group of knowledgeable, capable brewers, but the hardcore beer nerds are always careful not to frighten the new brewers with too much talk of pyruvate! The Club meets the second Friday of every month at 7:30 pm in the Southgate Civic Center (map). A good portion of each meeting is spent tasting and evaluating each members' beers. Often problem beers are brought so mistakes can he identified and, hopefully, corrected. Club equipment is available for members to use at no charge (non-members must pay a small rental fee), as is the club library. Meetings are informal and free for first-timers; regular members contribute $2 each to cover room rental. Drop by and see if the Downriver Brewers Guild is for you. Annual dues are $25.
So why join the DBG?
1. You can taste different styles of beer before you make them. You might discover some styles you enjoy which you didn't even know existed.
2. You get the advice of experienced home brewers. Books can be helpful, but to find out what's really important in home brewing you need to talk to someone who has experience. There are always members willing to help.
3. The aforementioned club equipment and library, which allow members to experiment with full-scale mashing without having to purchase extra equipment.
4. First Friday social night, an informal gathering at a different "beer worthy" venue on the (Duh) first Friday of each month.
5. A really cool club T-shirt, (periodically available,) it's reason enough to join.
6. Two formal parties each year: the summer Beerbecue, and the NotXmas party in midwinter.
7. The DBG Ticket to Ride, our designated-driver-on-call program.
8. The camaraderie of other brewers just like yourself.
