I spent the afternoon unpacking and checking in entries for my club's annual homebrew competition. Most entrants used our online registration system. Some used standard bottle labels but still gave us all the info. But my favorite entry was this one. It arrived 3 days after the deadline. 5 loose bottles were rattling around in a cardboard box. No labels, just "spice" or "IPA" written on the caps with a Sharpie. And at the bottom, with loose cash for the entry fee, was this "entry form", written on the back of a beer coaster:
I'm keeping this one. I might even have it framed. |

Not entirely unlike the guy that wrote his name on every page of the BJCP exam I just graded. Hey, maybe they can't follow directions, but at least they're on the field! |

Hey Paul, I did not even know there was a comp. in our area? Not that there is anything in the house worthy of such but, did you guys promote this thing? |

Yeah. The comp organizer was testy about the extra work we had to do for this guy. But I think he gets points for style. Lots of points. Greg, I did post just once about the comp, but it was a long time ago and I failed to follow it up with a reminder. I wish I had. We could have used a few entries to fill in some of the smaller categories. I'll be more assertive next year. If you want to stop in (and we REALLY need judges and stewards), it will be on Sunday in Newtown. I'm helping the cellarmaid and collating the results, so I'll be there all day. http://www.undergroundbrewers.org/snerhc/notices/2009_SNERHC_Notice.pdf |

You'll all be happy to know that Joe's stout took first in that category and progressed to the BOS round. I knew he had it in him! Full results will be posted tomorrow. I'm just back from 12 hours of running the computer and schlepping cases of bottles at the competition and I'm too beat to format the results now. |

What impresses the heck out of me is that his stout took first place, when all he entered was spice beer and IPA. Either Joe is a helluva brewer, or Paul and his fellow judges oughtta start spitting out the barley wine and imperial stouts instead of swallowing while they are judging. |

If I could find a smiley sticking its tongue out at you, I would insert it here. Yeah, the category was "Spice/Herb/Vegetable". Starts with an "S". Nyeah! You have no idea how beat I was when I posted last night. I'd been up since 6:00am and had spent most of the day carrying cases of bottles and half of the caterer's stuff up and down flights of stairs. It's a wonder I could still type at all. |
