"We're creating a brand." Gack. Sounds like BMC-speak. It sounds like the beer itself is secondary to the marketing campaign. |

Jim Koch promotes himself as being passionately devoted to quality and diversity, but you have to remember he first made his money as an investment banker and venture capital specialist. I don't think he'd consider this new beer if he didn't believe there was a fair chance it would be accepted. Some brewers are trying to figure out how to capture a piece of the luxury market that has in the past been devoted to rare wines and liquors. Obviously, for example, Sam Adams Utopias, despite its 27 percent alcohol and wooden presentation box for each bottle, hardly has a true value of $100. However, if people are willing to pay it, someone will be selling it. As our late member Brewer with Thick Wallet said here some years ago: "You pays your money and you takes your choice. Is this a great country or what?!" |
