Postman delivered my copy of Windoze 7 Pro today . . right on time. Paid $99 on a pre-order from Tiger several months ago. Don't think I'll even break the wrapper on it, just squirrel it away until this time next year when I build a new machine. Anybody else take the plunge? |

I've been running the release candidate beta of 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate on a new computer since May. I'm quite happy with it. It's a much better performer than Vista, although the look and feel are similar. So far I'd say it's even more stable and faster than XP, but I've got a fairly powerful machine (quad core processor, 8 GB of RAM). Does Win7 Pro include Virtual Windows XP? This is a somewhat ungainly (in terms of installation) but quite effective solution to legacy application incompatibility problems. It runs an entire copy of Windows XP SP3 inside a "virtual machine" that is isolated and basically independent of Win 7. This solved a couple of problems I had with older apps that they said either "not now" or "never" about new versions. I stay away from the operating system theological debates. I'm neither a Microsoft booster nor basher. I use Windows {or Windoze) because life would be harder without it than with it, which may or may not be praise but is true for me. To keep this barely beer-related, I've had no problems running ProMash. It won't read the default Win9x help file/tutorials (which I hardly use anyway), but there is a simple free third-party utility to convert them to the new format. |
