I just don't understand why someone chose November for this annual day. Why not a warmer day, like in September, or April!? Must have been someone who lives in FL, AZ, or Cali or something... |

Happy birthday, Hack! You'll get used to the 50 thing after awhile. It's no big deal, really. |

Happy birthday, Hack! I just turned 48 on Tuesday....everyone knows that we scorpios brew the best beer. I figured that since I taught 30 people how to brew all-grain exactly a month ago, I deserved a pass for today. I have been doing honey-dos as well.....just finished washing the exterior windows. Although I wish I was brewing, hunting, or fishing, instead. |

By the way, it was a rather nice day here in southern Ontario, mostly sunny with a high of almost 60 F. I work Saturdays now (teaching a totally different subject), so no teaching anyone to brew today for me. Connie and Paul, you guys are my inspiration. Turning 60 was no worse than turning 50. Now if I can coast into 70 in the same manner, I'll have it made. (Message edited by BillPierce on November 08, 2009) |

Happy b-day Hack! I'm 51 so I went through that a year and a half ago. No big deal. I had planned to brew at my club's TAFTHB day, but I had to work Sat, so I am brewing today, my version of HH's Rochefort 8 clone, using some home made caramel syrup. |

Happy B-day, DH! I can't see 50 in the rear view mirror anymore. I turned 57 in Sept. Not as old as Bill, but the percentage diff in our ages is shrinking. But I did get my ID checked when buying some beer at the grocery the other day. (They were training a new cashier and he was asking to see eveybody's ID.) We had 5 or 6 people brewing for TAFTHB day, along with several experienced kibitzers. Maybe 20 or so newbie's. I helped teach an all-grain class at my LHBS last Sunday, as they are usually too busy on a Saturday for a class. We had 25 or 26 people watch us brew 20 gallons of a nice robust porter. |

Dave, let us know how the Rocehfort turns out, especially the homemade caramel syrup. Just last night I opened the first bottle of my Rochefort 8 (the same recipe and method) that I brewed in early September. It's wonderful. |

Welcome to the club, Hack. According to Denny, my life began in September. We had 18 folks show up for our TAF day. We brewed an extract batch, an extract/steeping grain batch, an AG batch, and two different meads. I brewed my hh Rochefort 8 clone in June, and just popped the first one this week, my wife and I splitting a 12. It really turned out nice ... great recipe. I corked and caged 12 750ml bottles of it as well as a case of 12s. I think I'll try to come up with a nice label and give some as Christmas gifts this year. |

Happy B-day and yes, welcome to the geezer club. Nice and crisp here and never got to brew due to family duties ( wife with flu = cornered bear ) cold 'nuff to freeze the balls off a brass monkey here today, but still nice brewing weather. This weekend comming I plan on brewing a lager and a cream ale. |

Happy Bday Hack and Chumley. It was cold, windy, and pouring rain yesterday, but we had a good turnout for Teach Day in spite of it. |

My next door neighbor started brewing about 6 months ago and I helped a buddy down the street brew his grandmothers old beer recipe a couple of months ago, but I could not find anyone to try to convert this weekend. So I changed the equation....instead of two brewers making one batch of beer, I brewed two batches of beer. I started with SSOS, but mashed an extra 5 lbs of MO base malt and extra 1/4 lbs of other malts. I batch sparged, then added some Munich, chocolate, smoked pale, and more more crystal to the mashed SSOS grains and mashed the lot of it again while the SSOS boiled. I ended up with about 5.5 gallons of 1.065 SSOS and 4.5 gallons of 1.055 porter in the fermentors. I used wyeast 1028 for the SSOS. I had intended to step up the Activator pack and use it for both batches. I did not get it done, so I used some slurry left over from a bitter I fermented on wyeast 1968. Hopefully it will turn out ok. |

I showed four couples of my wife's coworkers an all-grain pale ale using some of this year's Cascades (very vaguely a try at a Liberty Ale clone). Probably no future homebrewers in the bunch but at least a future helper or two for bottling and whatnot. It was a good time anyways. Nice to see people enjoying themselves and the positive comments on my Hermaphrodite Pale Ale (aka LOLA) and altbier, on beers that I thought were OK at best, were nice, too. |

We held our preliminary round for our annual local competition, kicking out 4 categories. Later, it was also our monthly "stammtisch" where we get together to sample each others wares away from the regular club business meeting. Since the theme was big beers, a member had us at his house that has a few acres overlooking the marsh and offered to host a campout, which a few stayed in lieu of driving. Alas, I had to leave after the prelims, but sounded like a great evening was had by all participants. No beer was brewed but a couple of newbies helped steward and said they learned a lot about styles. Oh, and I love Teach a Friend in November: Beautiful sunny blue sky, high was 70F and low was 50F. Man I wish I could have stayed for the campout! Couldn't have had any better weather. |
