Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this idea on here or not, but Hoody spoke to me the other day about trying to print up some custom labels and putting them on our keggerators under the taps to indicate what was currently being served (I know some have the blank tap handles that allow you to put the labels in them).
Anyway, Hoody was thinking of some fridge magnets. I was at Walmart and found some "business card" sized fridge magnets with one side that has a peel back sticky side, 25 of them for $3. Perfect. 3.5" x 2" print size works out pretty close to 340x190 pixels on my 100dpi color printer. I started looking for beer lables (check out http://www.beerlabels.com for a huge assortment) for some of the clones I've made, but I also wanted to create some original artwork for ones like Skotrat's B52, my Chewspit Stout, and DC's Rye IPA.
Well, we wanted to put the brew date, and all the technical specs on it (OG, FG, SRM, IBU, ABV%, EFF%) and our Brewery name. Here are a couple of them.

Bia Brewing is Hoody's brew frame name (Bia is Hawaiian for Beer...think Jersey accent and just say, Beer..grin).

And you're going to love the Horse Tooth Pale Ale one (it is the HeeHaw horse) once I get the stats all in and ready to put on tap. This is going to be great to have the magnets from previous brews all over my fridge too.

Heheh...Apparent Attenuation on that was already insanely high at around 78-80% I think (I still don't know how it got that good) and the 1099 Whitbread yeast was only rated at 68-72%. I guess the honey can help give higher attenuations.
Anyway, there is some distinct taste that I can't identify in this brew that I'm going to have to see how it mellows over time. I'm not sure if it is how it is suppose to taste or if I'm just being sensitive to something. I bottled my 5 gallons and Hoody kegged his. If anyone wants to stop by some day and do a taste test, I'll have them...grin.
That is one thing I really do miss out on with these forums. I really wish I could taste some brews (even bad ones) with some of you guys to learn what the various off flavors or different tastes are for certain. I mean, I'm not even sure I know what "estery" tastes like.

I painted the top of my converted chest freezer with chalkboard finish. I just write above each tap what beer is there. |

Jeff, I don't know how active the homebrew club is in your area, but most clubs have at least occasional sessions to evaluate beers and comment on them. You can learn a lot about flavors, both good and bad, by comparing your impressions with others who include experienced tasters and judges.
By the way, I notice that you live in Boise. There is a good homebrewer there, Frank Gunderson, who goes by the nickname "gunslinger" and was quite active on this board a year or two ago. |

I use Avery 3 1/2" diskette labels stuck onto cardboard from empty Kleenex boxes, as it's nice & thin. For the magnets I just use the stuff that comes in a sheet with the peel back glue on one side. I just cut maybe four small rectangles & attach them near the corners of the cardboard, which is enough to keep the magnets stuck onto my beer freezer. I have around 20 or so of these things which I reuse depending upon what's currently on tap. If I ever get sick of a label, I just reprint a new one & stick it over the old. |
