I am new here and I just want to write that I love Bill and Denny. They are truly Home brewing experts. One day I aspire to be just like them and have many answers George |

Remember, it's OK to love Bill and Denny, just don't LOVE Bill and Denny! (OK, who can tell me what movie I lifted that line from?) John |

After tasting my first try at the Rye IPA I can also say to Denny "I love you man!" How many remember that commercial? Robert |

I'm far from a homebrewing expert...I'm just somebody who loves to brew and is fortunate to have enough time to spend a lot of it online spewing my heresies. Most of what I've learned has been based on what I've read here and on rcb from other homebrewers. The I take what I've leearned and experiment with anything that makes sense. I try to encourage that attitude in other brewers....if we all pass around what we've learned, we all get better for it. No group hug, please... |

I think he's related to Stuart Smalley. ;^) "I'm a good brewer. I'm a knowledgeable brewer. I'm a helpful brewer. And doggone it, people like my beer." |

I'd guess Mr Handy's IP appears to trace to a hotel internet access point in Washington DC. George .... could it be? /Fredrik |

Denny, I'm drinking a Rye IPA as I write this. It is now my favorite beer. Definately 10 gallon batches from now on with this one.. I wanted to save it for a couple of more weeks, but I don't think it will last that long. |

I'm sorry walt, I love you too. Can someone please tell me how to make a yeast starter? I read many times you must do this. I am currenltly making 20L batches and use White Labs Tubes. Would a 12L starter be ok? George P.S. My brother Jack says hello (Ha Ha) |

George: Bill needs to address your last question. He is the most fluent one on the board with these metric numbers and stuff. |

The usual very rough rule of thumb is to pitch a starter 10 percent of the batch size. For a 20 liter batch, that would be a 2 liter starter, which is acceptable for stepping up a so-called pitchable tube or vial. Yes, you could step it up again to 12 liters but even I'd say that's unnecessary for a 20 liter batch of most ales. |
