rec.crafts.brewing is pretty popular but the signal to noise ratio is pretty poor.

"Signal to noise ratio": the relationship between information genuinely related to the topic of the newsgroup and the amount of spam, trolling, bickering, etc. that acts as interference.

Personally, I don't find the SNR on rcb much different than it is here.
