I have a thermometer on order for my HLT, and am trying to determine just how high-up to locate this on my BK (converted Sanke). I typically do 5 gal. AG batches, but plan on moving to 10 gal. soon. Should I place it just above or below the first ring on the keg?

I have mine below the first ring and it is a short stem so it doesn't interfere with my herms coils

I have mine at the same level as the valve. If there's any temperature variation vertically in the HLT, at least I know the temperature of the water I'm drawing.
