i know that in the AG recipe, it is recommended that you take the first runnings and boil down till you get a nice syrup.
can you also do this with an extract version by taking a bit of the wort after you disolve the extract? or should you just do a 90 minute boil? or both?

You could boil a couple of pounds or so of the extract in a gallon of water (be careful not to scorch it) before adding the rest of the extract and water for a Scottish ale, although I would be inclined merely to do a long boil.
