So, for a variety of reasons I decided to abandon plastic in favour of glass. The thing is, nobody around here produces glass carboys. The only glass fermenters available are old wine carboys, veterans of hundreds of yard sales. I hit the "used stuff for sale" web pages and it seemed that everywhere I looked people were selling one or two carboys, from remote parts of the country, at exorbitant prices. One lady in the north wanted 700 NOK (about 110 USD) for one carboy! I was dreading having to locate single carboys in remote locations, then borrowing/renting a car multiple times as I don't own one, just to acquire the four or five carboys that I need. Then suddenly I found one guy who lives three blocks from me. He was selling five carboys, at about 40 USD for the lot! It took me 5 minutes to walk over there, and he kindly drove me and the carboys back home. Anyway, as you can see from the pic they are quite old and require some cleaning, but still I am very happy

Nice. I picked up 3 25litre carboys from freecycle. No charge and the lady even dropped them off!. |

Jim, the green one is 40 litres (10,5 gallons), perfect for larger batches of perfected recipes! For to accuse requires less eloquence, such is man's nature, than to excuse; and condemnation, than absolution, more resembles justice. -Hobbes, Leviathan

Should be ok, but I need to check the structural integrity of that basket, I think For to accuse requires less eloquence, such is man's nature, than to excuse; and condemnation, than absolution, more resembles justice. -Hobbes, Leviathan

Those large glass wine demijohns are somewhat popular here as well, Joakim. They are quite thin and great care needs to be taken when cleaning them; they also need to be protected by the basket, as you mention. Otherwise you are asking for disaster. |
