Hardcore birthers will not be swayed by any of this. They will merely shift focus to other aspects such as religious and cultural influences that reinforce their claim that Obama is not truly American and therefore not one of us. |

I never understood this in the first place. If his mom was an American citizen, doesn't that make him a "natural born citizen" no matter where he was born? I was born on an RAF base in England to US citizens and I never had to be naturalized. My favorite whiplash-inducing u-turn has already hit the airwaves. After saying for months that Obama should release the form in order to put the matter to rest, conservative lawmakers are now bitching that he released the form when he should be concentrating on more important things. Dude just can't win. |

I see that he agrees that he should be doing more important things than screwing with the blitherings of almost three quarters of Republican voters who aren't sure about or totally convinced that he is not an American. That is why he bothered to publish the silly document. But as Bill points out, they will simply move on to another target. |

I can't wait to see how many birthers there will still be in a month. Fewer, sure, but I won't be surprised to see not much fewer. |

Believe it or not whenever we have any kind of event here in Bartlesville OK, there is a group that stands infront of the community center with a sign that says "9/11 was an inside job." With OK Mozart happening in June they will be there then as well..... |

Stuff like this is never about the facts. The only way to win is to not engage the kooks - which can admittedly be difficult when the kooks are granted prime airtime or even host their own shows. |

I think Obama screwed up here. He should have let the thing fester on for another year. The Republicans would have spent that year tying themselves in ever-more-intricate knots, trying to stay on the birthers' good side without losing the independent vote. Then Obama could have produced the document and made them look even sillier than they do now. He gave them an easy out on this one. But maybe he's not as devious and cynical as I am. I agree with Dan that this won't change many hearts or minds. Some people just hate the guy with a passion that goes way deeper than logic or facts, and that won't change. His presence in the White House is illegitimate; the reasons why don't matter much. If you read the comments posted on any article on Yahoo! News, regardless of topic, there will be dozens of rants about how "fascist, socialist, Islamic, un-American, stupid Obama" is to blame. The topic could be anything at all, and the rant need not make any sense. It's all about the hate. My very favorites were comments on a recent story about how Obama was encouraging the private sector to take over space launches. Predictably, there were rants about how he was destroying NASA, undermining a great American institution. But several specifically identified the crime and criminal as "Socialist", an example of how he hated capitalism and was working to undermine it at every turn. Yes, breaking up a government-owned and -run monopoly and encouraging competitive, private, profit-making alternatives was socialist and anti-capitalist. When even the basic definitions of words don't matter, facts are irrelevant. |
