It got me thinking about the ads for Drewry's beer in the early 1960s (I know that dates me) that promoted Fuggle hops. They mispronounced them as "Fugle" (rhymes with bugle) and featured people attempting to define "the Fugle hop." I remember a woman describing it as a dance, I'm assuming because of the similarity to the frug, a dance of the era. |

Bob, I have a picture of my mother dancing the Charleston when she was in high school. And I very seldom saw him dance, but my father told of seeing one of the Wright Brothers do a flying exhibition at the 1908 Illinois State Fair. Yes, I'm older than dirt. |

My Grandmother was a member of the Womens Christian Temperance Union until she died at 93. One of her proudest moments was actually meeting Carrie Nation. She and a few cronies were responsible for keeping Eldorado Illinois dry and in poverty by blocking Holiday INN and others from coming to the county with their evil bars. My first brewpot turned out to be her old canning pot. i'll bet she is still spinning in her grave! |

Marc, my father made bathtub gin in Chicago in the 1920s. When I was growing up he would show a pair of brass knuckles he said were from that era (he was in the insurance business at the time and one of his customers owned a taxi fleet). He also remembered nickel beer and free lunches in the pre-Prohibition saloons. On the other side of my family, my mother's father ran away from home in 1905 at the age of 15 after he was caught playing cards by his strict Methodist mother, whom he never spoke to again in his life. He made it as far west as Dubuque, IA, where his first job was cleaning a saloon after closing time. He ended up marrying the daughter of one of the regulars, and at the time of his death owned a tavern north of La Crosse, WI. So I suppose my love of beer and brewing comes naturally. That was great! I've never seen that one. What I'd really like to see are the old Hamm's commercials from the 60's, with the bear, and the jingle: "from the land of sky blue waters...Hamm's the beer, refreshing" |

Randy, they played those Hamm's commercials well into the late 70's and possibly the early 80's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc7HoWEk6y8

one of the biggest disappointments of my life was being handed 2 cans of hamms 3.2 beer by the outfitter after doing 10 days on my own in the boundry waters after my buddy stood me up the day we were supposed to leave for the trip. |
