Dear Homebrewer,
DRAFT invites you to enter and participate in the Thirteenth Dayton Beerfest Competition. This event will consist of a sanctioned homebrew competition beginning at 9:00 AM at Columbian Hall in Dayton OH (4704 Burkhardt Rd.). Once again the Dayton Beerfest is part of the 2008 Midwest Homebrewer of the Year competition!
The Thirteenth Dayton Beerfest Competition is open to all non-commercial, home-produced beers, meads, and ciders. Enter as many categories as often as you wish.
ALL entries must be registered via our online web form . Simply fill in the form and you will instantly receive a unique entry number. Write this number on the cap of bottle cap with a permanent black marker (like a Sharpie). If the cap is already marked, first apply a 3/4" round white label. If you are unable to mark your bottles directly, write the entry number on a piece of paper and attach it to the bottle with a rubber band.
Each contest entry shall consist of two bottles of any style (11 oz mininum size) for BOTTLED beer. An equivalent amount of DRAFT beer will be accepted in either two 12 oz or larger pop bottles, one 1-liter or larger pop bottle, or an equivalent amount of beer in a mini-keg or keg with dispensing equipment. Kegged beer that is counter-pressure filled in bottles is considered BOTTLED beer for competition entry purposes.
No recipe is required, although if you win we'd like a copy for our newsletter.
The entry fee for the competition is $5 per entry. Please make checks payable to DRAFT. DO NOT SEND CASH. Entries should be shipped so as to arrive by September 8th. Ship entries to:
Local entries and fees may be dropped off the morning of the competition as long as they have been registered online by September 8th. Judges and stewards may hand-carry their entries and fees, but should mark their caps with the entries numbers as described above to facilitate check-in.
Packaging & Shipping
ALWAYS KEEP THE ENTRY FEE WITH THE BEER, regardless if the entries are mailed, dropped off in advance or hand-delivered on the day of the competition.
If beers are mailed, please put the entry fee in a water-resistant zip-top plastic bag and affix to the underside of the shipping box lid. This will help keep the checks from being damaged by water. DO NOT SEND CASH! Make checks payable to DRAFT. Do not mail entry fees separately from the beer.
When packing the beers for shipment, DO NOT USE STYROFOAM PEANUTS if possible. They make a huge mess when unpacking.
The Thirteenth Dayton Beerfest will accept entries in all categories as defined by the 2008 BJCP Style Guidelines. All entries must indicate both a category number and a sub-category letter in addition to the name of the style. If an entry requires additional explanation that a judge should see (for example, information for a specialty beer), please include this information in the Special Ingredients/Classic Style box on the entry form.
All entries will be judged according to the appropriate sub-category style guidelines. However, categories may be combined with related categories for the purpose of awarding ribbons and prizes. Multiple entries per style are allowed, but only one is eligible for award per subcategory.
The judging will take place in open sessions on September 13th. We will make every effort to secure qualified BJCP judges. Register to judge on-line here. Judges and Stewards will be awarded experience points in accordance with the BJCP competition rules. The competition will begin at 9:00 AM however we request that Judges and Stewards arrive by 8:30 AM for assignments. Local drop-offs and hand-carried entries should arrive by 8:30 AM as well.
Beds for Judges
If you are traveling from out of town and would like a place to stay for Friday and/or Saturday night, please indicate your request on the Judge Registration form. We will try to find free accommodations within homes of friendly DRAFT club members.
Every effort will be made to return score sheets with judges' comments promptly to all entrants. Handsome wooden plaques, generously provided by contest sponsors, will be awarded for first place winners. Second and third place winners will receive ribbons. Awards will also be presented for Best of Show and Best of Dayton. Winners will be announced at the Awards Banquet and pot-luck Foodfest held Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 6 PM at the Columbian Banquet Hall 4704 Burkhardt Rd. Dayton OH. Scoresheets and awards may be picked up in person at this time. Those scoresheets and awards not picked up at the competition will be mailed later. Winners will also be posted on this web page.
