The Homebrew Digest Announcements

Homebrew Digest System Announcements

09/25/2008   I've been remiss! The pace of life of late has prevented me from updating y'all. Here's a brief synopsis:
  • We've slipped the bonds of our high-priced, low bandwidth DSL line, and as of 26 August, we are on a high-speed, significantly-lower-cost ISP! More speed for you; less cost for the HBD!
  • A day-long outtage 24 September was caused by a rogue perimeter defense program, which eventually put the HBD server itself in its "deny". Diagnosing that problem turned up an ages-old, overlooked issue within DNS. The *good* news from all of this is that DNS has been patched up, and server response time is orders of magnitude better than just two days ago. Also, nagging email issues with several ISPs should now be resolved.
So, if you're on Charter, Cox, Verizon, and some of the other ISPs that have consistently had trouble emailing into the HBD.ORG domain, it's time to try again - to paraphrase Pogo (Walt Kelly): we have met the enemy, and he was us!
01/06/2008   Well, I thank the good Lord above that we didn't make that 50% mark on the T1, or I'd be in deep hurt right now!

Time to face the facts, folks:

  • Participation in the HBD is at the lowest levels in memory, and has been for some time.
  • SPAM mail comes in at such high volumes that I think the server is rejecting legitimate mail due to the bandwidth consumed by the detritus.
  • Web forums have superceded email digests as the main source for information though, personally, I have had issues wading through the junk to find the gold in them.
  • It has proven cheaper for many of our former sponsors to add their own forums to their websites as the cost of bandwidth has receded in recent years.
  • Due to the economy or whatever reason, people just aren't donating to the upkeep of HBD much anymore.
The end result is that the HBD has not been able to attract a major sponsorhsip last year nor this year.

The economy, in Michigan in particular, frankly sucks. I am employed by a US automaker which, as they all are, is struggling for survival. I cannot and do not consider my employment secure in this environment. I will continue to run the HBD as it is for as long as I can do so. Should something happen to my wife's employment or mine, the HBD will have to be immediately shut down as we will not have the finances available for its continuation.

Club websites and mailing lists will endure as long as operation of the HBD itself continues, as will the preserve and the Brews & views BBS. The HBD will, however, no longer accept requests for web space or new mailing lists. If something "evil" happens, I will do my best to forewarn those on board so that other arrangements for the hosted content can be made. I will also seek a new home for the Digest archives and, if possible, for the Digest itself.

It's been a great run, folks, but, apparently, history will not be denied her price.

On a happier note, Rob Gardner, the original HBD Janitor, was in touch with me late last year, and has provided some of the very early Digest material - most of it predates the automation he built to handle compilation and distribution of the HBD. This material will be added to the archive once I get the chance to do so.

07/30/2007

I've been remiss! I promised to do this some time ago: The Home Brew Digest, Inc. EIN as a non-profit is 26-0150215. Under IRS rules, we are a 501(c)3 corporation until such time as our annual taxable receipts consistently exceed $5000 - not likely to happen any time soon, methinks; nonetheless, I will be filing IRS Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code because many corporations require a copy of the resulting letter before acknowledging a 501(c)3 and donating (not that we have many corporations beating our door down to donate, anyway!).

Here's the relevant portion of the IRS code for those who can donate without the recognition of exemption letter:

    Form 1023 not necessary. The
following types of organizations may be
    considered tax exempt under section
501(c)(3) even if they do not file
    1023.
    • Churches, including synagogues,
      temples, and mosques.
    • Integrated auxiliaries of churches and
      conventions or associations of churches.
    • Any organization that has gross
receipts in each taxable year of normally
      not more than $5,000.

That last one, there, describes Home Brew Digest, Inc. to a tee...

05/13/2007

Instead of Home Brew Digest, we are now Home Brew Digest, Incorporated, a 501(c)3 corporation. We are an educational charity, dedicated to disseminating information pertaining to the home production of fermented foodstuffs, including beer, wine, cheese, sauerkraut, etc.

If you were waiting to make a donation to the HBD because you couldn't deduct it from your income taxes, you can now. It complicates the records I must now maintain, and reporting I must do to the IRS, but, in light of our last fundraising success (T1 upgrade - ~$80 raised against a $3600 need), something had to be done to improve our ability to raise needed funds - particularly when considering the age of several of the HBD servers.

Well, we'll see where our new tax-deductible status gets us! Once I have the "official" EIN number, I will add a page to the HBD showing our 501(c)3 status and relevant information.

03/21/2007   Well, well, well! We had a visit from a hacker today. As this fine, upstanding person was busily trying to shanghai our beloved HBD server into service in a 'bot net (yeah - I know what you were up to), they crashed the box. Good for us, bad or them.

Upon reboot, I discovered their presence, tracked them to the node they used to hack us, and notified the admins there (likely, they were working from a hacked box, but we may have caused another 'bot-infected machine to drop from their network. Who knows.)

If you notice any strange behavior from the HBD server, be sure to let me know. They're picking new vulnerabilities everyday, and if this person hadn't crashed the server, I may not have noticed their presence for quite some time.

On another note, we still haven't had a bite on our T1 sponsorship request. Oh, well. Keep those donations coming. If we reach half the amount in single donations, I still may kick the thing off in the hope that we garner a full sponsor quickly down the road.

03/12/07   We have an opportunity to upgrade our connection to a full T1 for $299 a month. This will allow me to bring on more "full janitor" people, and has the potential to greatly enhance the HBD (remote programming on the current pipe is ridiculous), plus faster performance from the Brewss & Views system, HTML Digest serving, and more efficient delivery of the email Digest.

Since this is a significant increase in our monthly outlay, I've decided that we'll only go forward with it if we reconnect with a full sponsor. I've contacted Northern Brewer to see if they are interested; however, you can help by passing this along - A $3600 annual sponsorship will garner the sponsor the masthead on the Digest AND the banner on The Brewery. That's $3600 less than nabbing the two would cost normally.

01/18/06   GADS! What is WITH Detroit Edison lately?! Another power failure, folks. This one happened probably at about the same time I left for work. Another mystery solved, too. There's a fried UPS in the system, and this power failure took it out. So, the servers going down had to do with a UPS that wasn't. Come tho think of it, that's TWO that aren't, since the systems are cascaded. Guess I know what the next purchase for the HBD network is going to be...
01/14/06   Mmmm. Seems a power failure today kicked out the servefs, resulting in a runaway process in the web server, filling a frive and crashing the HBD server. Joy! At least I now understand why the drive filled up, and can look out for this condition next time the power fails. But why didn't the UPS keep the servers alive?
12/29/2005   Age and treachery win hands down. Performance problem with the HBD server reported today appears to be related to a failed or failing drive in the array. I managed to trick the system into disgorging the RAID onto distinct drives, which should have alleviated the problem. Please swing through the HBD site and look for dead things. If you find them, don't just load them into your trunk and drive on, but let me know what's not working...
07/16/2005

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH! I'm about to give up on mailman. Due to an unfortunate accident, ALL Mailman lists were lost today, including the archives, memberlists, and backups. Gone. Lost. Clubs, DBD, Sake list, all of them. Server, too. Life's too short for this crap.

I will rebuild the server once I get the time. Clubs will have to notify me of what their list name was, and who the admin was.

06/24/2005

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH! A simple update to the Mailman server has result in its failure. If you have a club list on the HBD server and can't get through, this is the problem. No ETR as yet as I'm not entirely sure why it has failed.

04/19/2005

Another server bytes the dust... Seems our DNS server has gone on to join the "other team". Have patched together a temporary replacement, and have a new server on the way. For those curious about any missed Digest mailings or failed mailing lists over the past several hours (up to 4 days, on the offside chance this had failed earlier and wasn't noticed), all should be OK now - the maillogs show mail now being properly routed to the destination domains rather than to localhost. Any missed messages should be in teh respective archive files.

11/25/2004   Sorry for the outage today! Thought I had a hacker on board; however, I found it to be a "hole" in my file system maintenance. Seems I had installed a proxy server without realizing it, and its cache ate a big ol' gobbet of drive space. This in turn caused multiple systems to fail - including those which most hackers intentionally disable! Well, once my analysis was done, and I shut the servers down and reclaimed the space (from 100% consumed to 14% on a 10 gig drive...), there remained a disk error over some of Apache's necessary files. Sigh.

In any case, one Thanksgiving dinner missed, but the HBD has been restored. Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

09/20/2004   Ack! An unnoticed typo in the sendbrew routine modification I made 09/16/2004 constipated the Digest a wee bit. Thanks to Jeff Renner for notifying me that the Digest wasn't going out. All is now repaired, and a Digest should go out tonight.
09/08/2004   Large leaps in my SPAM protection strategy tonight. Unfortunately, not so on my virus protection strategy (CLAMAV and milter are not getting along at the moment...)

If your digest has gone missing, there are two potentials: you or your domain appear on one of the added blacklists or you had the misfortune of being one of the "victims" of the virus filter failures during experimentation this evening. In any case, you should find the Digest intact on the website or in the archives - and my apologies for the inconvenience!

08/17/2004   Oh, what fresh hell is this?! Something is interfering with the mail queue. Investigating...
08/05/2004   Whooooo doggies! It seems that the new mailer routine works, and everyone is now receiving their Digest (If you aren't: put us in your spam filters as a pass-through...). I can now focus on other things. Like loafing. And, perhaps one day: brewing.

The Janitor address has been restored - I had forgotten how much of the moderation process depends on its being there.

Next planned hiccup: reinstating the spam filters. Wish me luck!

Ah! Life...

07/28/2004   YOU HAVE NOT BEEN SINGLED OUT!!!
Many still are not receiving the HBD, and no-one received the one that went out last night due to a programming glitch (sorry!)
  • A new address parsing method is in place, and I fixed the FUBAR which interfered with the distribution of the Digest last night (that issue is in the archives and on the web. I'll have to kludge together a routine to resend them when missed in that manner*. In the meantime, please use your browser or FTP client...) This routine is an adaptation of the method I use to send the Probes out. Should resolve the issue - assuming my coding around the permissions was effective :^)
*I have written the new routine, using the same mailing method, to send out the copy from the archive. And, so far, it is working - 150 addresses and counting. Hopefully, it is sending what it is supposed to be sending...
My apologies to those who received more than one copy. I guess I'm not getting enough sleep to be as careful as I should be in the code...)
  • If your club had a mailing list, and you wish it to be re-opened, email me at webmaster at hbd.org
  • As noted in the HBD y'all missed, the Janitor address was retired until such time as I can implement a spam filter (without breaking the rest of the HBD, as happened last time...). 20,000 spam messages in one day is a bit much to expect anyone to wade through, isn't it? In any case, use my personal address in the meantime. pbabcock followed by the customary symbol, and this domain will work.
07/14/2004   IF YOUR CLUB WEBSITE WAS HOSTED BY HBD.ORG before the crash, you need to notify me at webmaster@hbd.org in order to have your site restored. This is being done this way for two reasons:
  • First, it provides me with a "natural governor" so that I don't take time away from more mission-critical tasks.
  • Second, it will help me cull the list, removing those who requested, but never bothered to use, space and those who are no longer using their space.
As soon as I resolve the bigger issues with HBD.ORG's transition to its new home (like the spotty delivery of the HBD itself, for instance...) I will be editing the hosted clubs list to remove those which never contacted me for restoration. Therefor, if you want your site maintained on the HBD server, LET ME KNOW!
NOTE: If you've already contacted me and have had your site restored, no need to recontact - AS LONG AS YOU CAN ACCESS YOUR DIRECTORIES VIA FTP, your site is restored and all is well. If your site username is early in the alphabet, there is a chance that your website has been restored, but that your webmaster cannot access it via FTP. These are subject to deletion once I get the time to focus on the issue of club webspace.
CLUBS: don't assume your site is in order. Verify with YOUR WEBMASTER (not with me) that s/he has contacted me and has had his/her access restored. ONLY YOUR WEBMASTER should contact me. No other requests will be honored.
07/01/2004   Fudge. Seems the moderator function is now on the blink. Sent a "kill" in on the spam that made it into the last Digest, and it made it in anyway. A janitor's work is never done...
06/30/2004   Well! I received a Digest at my work address after last night's test. In fact, I received two. Neither had a subject line, but were otherwise intact. This is good. I also managed to clean up some coding errors that had been creating a bit of a "garbage collection" issue over the years - added bonus!

Unfortunately, there was only one post in the queue last night, so the changes I made were not "trialed" against the actual script. Cross them fingers, y'all!

06/29/2004   Very frustrating. Everything seems to be OK with the scripts; however, when the list of addresses is piped into sendmail, it seems that only a few are used. Manually tested the mailing algorithm today using the Digest that didn't get mailed yesterday. The logs show that the Digest went out to many; however, I know that I did not receive one here. More work to be done. At least the web, rec.crafts.brewing, and archive copies seem to be working OK...

Do keep sending postings - tests are delayed by not having anything in the queue.

06/28/2004   Wrote a small test into the sendbrew script. Should help narrow the problem, assuming a Digest mails out tonight.
06/27/2004   Still debugging the delivery of the Digest. The outgoing script appears to be doing as deigned, and reviewing the mail queue, Digests are going out to domains other than hbd.org; however, many, including me, are not getting their Digest. I have a few ideas regarding what might be causing this. Will keep you posted on my progress.
06/22/2004   Implemented the first part of a home-brewed defunct address probe routine to help cull dead address from the subscription list and reduce the load ont he server. This first phase, isolating and identifying individual addresses, generates individual mailings to the addresses in the list. The thought is that those who have not figured out how to unsubscribe can simply reply to make their desire known, and those addresses which are defunct will bounce back to the probe address. (A common practice, but keep in mind that the HBD scripts are all custom, and this module has not yet been written for it.)

The probe was a roaring success - well over 600 pieces of mail were received back, each indicating either a desire to unsubscribe, or a defunct address. So ends the GOOD news! The bad news is that I had not expected such a response, and had not yet implemented a parser for automagical handling of the messages. In order to prevent the appearance that the HBD is a SPAM rag, and the resultant blacklistings, complaints, yada, yada, yada; I have temporarily disabled Digest delivery until such time as I can finish wading through these messages and remove the subscriptions.

Fret not! The HBD is healthy - just have to get this bit of work done. I'm hoping that delivery will be re-enabled tonight. Wish me luck and spede!

06/14/2004   Well, Brews & Views is back; however, it is back in the state it was in when I upgraded to v4.0/ SInce I do not know how its data directory got whacked, (the backups are stored in that directory. Go figure...), I'll have to "off-shore" the backups until I figure out what's going on here.

In any case, its back. I'm a bit ticked about losing the threads between May 28 and, apparently, the evening of June 10, but little more than a post-mortem can be done about it at this point...

06/13/2004   Aaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhh! Well, now discus has munched its config file (directory and all!), the SPAM filters are malforming all of the mbox files for local mail, and one of the new Seagate drives is flaking out! Am I cursed?

If you're trying to access Brews & Views, it's down again. I'll do my dagnabidest to bring it back online unscathed, but I'm gettign a sinking feeling that the good Lord is trying to tell me something...

06/04/2004   Well, now! Out she spat an issue of the HBD! Those who read on the web will note that the new issue has not made it there. Those that read in email or on rec.crafts.brewing will note some screwy formatting codes have passed through as is rather than as the the formatting they represent. Both are related - for some reason, the shell interpretor is ignoring them and treating them as plain ol' characters. As you might imagine, this is interfering with the port to the web as well. More research required - if you have the answer, email me!

In any case, though the HBD is accepting posts, I have disabled automatic generation of the daily digest until I can resolve some of these issues...

06/01/2004   A ksh package has been located and installed. Testing of the HBD scripts can now continue.

NOTE: These difficulties have precluded our ability to present, through our friends at Lallemand and through the efforts of Rob Moline, the annual "Fortnight of Yeast". Once the HBD is functional once again, I will contact Rob to see if it can commence then. In the meantime, my sincerest apologies. I know how valuable the opportunity has been in the past.

05/31/2004   Restoration of the HBD has hit a snag. The scripts are based on kornshell, which seem to no longer be supported by modern linux distributions. Am looking for a substitute or buildable package.

Also, I am still wrestling with Proftpd - a most finicky package. Users should be able to get in unfettered; however, anonymous ftp (archive retrieval) is not working at this time.

Finally, the Recipator may not be recovered after this move. Mark compiled it, and I do not believe I have the source. Could still be Apache 2.0; however, it (Recipator) appears to be not finding files, and the system logs are providing no guidance.

It has not been a good day...

05/29/2004   Finally got ftp working properly on the new server. The rest of the club sites will be along shortly. AGAIN: if you are a webmaster, you must contact me to regain access to you site.
05/28/2004 Threw in the towel and upgraded The Brewery (brewery.org) and Brews & Views...
05/27/2004 Restored The Brewery (brewery.org) and Brews & Views
05/26/2004 debugging Apache 2.0 permissions
debugging HBD scripts
05/24/2004 Restoring club sites.
NOTE: If your site IS restored, have your webmaster contact me for the new password. If your club IS NOT restored, contact me if there is an immediate requirement (ie, upcoming event) and I'll see what I can do. Otherwise, you may be in the "debugging" section below...
05/24/2004 Debugging sendmail.
05/22/2004 Changing default mail xport from postfix to sendmail
05/06/2004 Unfortunately, the HBD and related systems are down at the moment. We are FINALLY moving the HBD onto its new server. This sudden flurry of activity was precipitated by failures related to our recent upgrade in IP space. The new box should make the wait worthwhile - BLINDING speed (2.6GHz processor) and plenty (360 GB) of storage. Please bear with. Hopefully, it will be worth the wait...

If you weren't trying to reach HBD.ORG, you may have been trying to reach one of the domains hosted by us on the BREW server. These will be out of commission for the short term as well - though, they'll likely return to being before the HBD itself does (only because they'll be easier to configure than I expect the the HBD scripts will be...)

03/25/2004   Ack! Something ate the subsciber list! No BIG deal for most: I was able to restore one from Monday, 3/23/2004 - so, if you're wondering where your Digest has been, that's where. If you subscribed or unsubscribed since 3/23/2004, you'll need to do it all over again (sorry!).
03/05/2004   Due to all the viruses and SPAM flying about, and the paucity of posts to the Digest, I am throttling back Digest production to ensure that there is adequate delay in the queue to prevent further SPAM incursions. Initially, this will be the elimination of Saturday delivery, but may be expanded to whack a midweek day as well. Note that this is only temporary - the queue normally fires back up after all the spring cleaning is done :^)
02/12/2004   Um, the brief outage today was due to the phone wire being accidentally pulled from the connector for a brief period of time. Thankfully, the electrician spotted his error quickly and fixed it before I broke a blood vessel...
02/10/2004   If you noticed about four hours of downtime today, that is because the electrician working on my home installed the new breaker panel today. That is now out of the way...
02/09/2004   A couple of notes:
  • The Google Ads on the HBD pages were put there by me - no-one has hijacked your browser. The HBD earns money each time someone clicks through one of those ads. (Hint: Click early; click often!) It's not going to make the HBD rich; however, it does provide some income outside of the donations and sponsorships. Anything is better than nothing.
  • There were two HBDs missed last week 2/3/04 and 2/4/04. These were not due to any failures, nor did I withold the Digest in an effort to prompt more donations. It's been a long time since this phenomenon has occurred, but there simply were not enough posts in the queue for the Digest to publish (it looks for a minimum of 10K before publishing - see the FAQ).
  • Our connectivity bill has increased for 2004. Many have noted the sluggishness of the HBD/Brewery in reponding at peak times - particularly at the lunch hour. This has affected my ability to remotely administer the network as well. Increased bandwidth would help the situation, but in researching it, I have been told by our ISP that it is technically infeasible to increase it. No cost-effective, higher bandwidth solution has yet been identified.
To resolve the inability to administer the system in this condition, a cable modem has been installed and bridged into the network to allow a consistent connection for remote maintenance. This does not outwardly enhance your ability to connect, except where system maintenance issues would have prevented you from doing so. (It did, however, muddy up our security as these cable systems are a notorious hunting grounds for hackers...)
  • And, lest I forget, Beer, Beer & More Beer (morebeer.com) has taken over as our sponsor for 2004! Thanks, Olin! Be sure to pay their site a visit. If you appreciate their service to the HBD community, be sure to buy a few things while you're there!
My thanks to all who came to the aid, once again, of the HBD in its current financial trouble. I do believe that 2004 is covered in full. Not yet at the level that I like to keep the HBD finances (2 years of connectivity); however, this will sustain the HBD. We have a commitment from B3 to sponsor this year, which should put us to the 2 year level; however, that deal has not yet come to fruition, which puts NEXT year at risk since it is pushing the renewal cycle out by two months already.
10/21/2003   Well! Spencer Thomas has accepted my invitation to assist in the moderation of the HBD, and has been at it for a few weeks now. It's a relief to know that the Digest is once again under two pairs of eyes, because it can be challenging to catch everything at all times. THANKS, SPENCER!

There have been many other offers of help, which I truly appreciate and have retained for future reference. However, the state of the HBD server is shaky at best, and many systems are not behaving as they should be due to memory and drive issues. Until I resolve these, I cannot saddle anyone with any of the systems or domains in good conscience as the opportunity for failure is tremendous due to all the "special means" which must be taken in their maintenance. The move to the new server is still hampered by technical issues, but I am steadily working through them - there is a light at the end of this tunnel!

Regarding disk issues, one of the most pressing ones is that of space. Unfortunately, this has required that I suspend hosting of any new brew clubs as well as any expansion of the preserve until the move is made. If you are having difficulty finding hosting arrangements, you can still contact me, but I will be "selling" you space on the HBD's commercial server (babstech.com). The proceeds from this sale of space benefits the HBD server, and the "contract" only need be renewed if, at the end of one year's time, I have not yet been able to move the HBD to the new box (the chances of this happening are remote, but real).

Finally, I am having MAJOR revisions to my home to accomodate the needs of my family (particularly with the recent birth of Jillian Marie - child number 5!). In light of this, there will de a disruption of service to all hbd.org domains, and those hosted on our network when they upgrade the electrical service at my home. I will attempt to add an announcement to the HBD and through the other communications systems on board beforehand, but you know how these contractors can be - I have no clue when they will be on site, but I know it will be fairly soon.

That's all the news for now! Thanks for your support of the HBD!

9/30/2003   Heh! I've been remiss and have not been entering news here, haven't I?

This morning, the server was down due to a filesystem failure at reboot last night. Discovered the outage this morning, repaired the error and restarted.

2003 to date:

  • Our ISP - the same ones that claimed they would never go belly up - went belly up. We're are now all the way down to the backbone source, which is probably a safer place to be than anywhere else.
  • The HBD server is on its last legs:
    • Drives are full
    • Memory is failing
    • Filesystems are failing
All considered, this server has out-performed the two previous ones. A replacement waits in the wings, but, thanks to the advances in security made to Linux since the last time I had to build a server, it's not an easy port, and it's giving me fits. Soon... Soon...
  • GADZOOKS!, but the idiots with the viruses are sure tying up email! Between them and the spam-mongers, I'm surprised the server has enough capacity for anything else!
  • Karl has retired from Janitordom. We'll miss ya, Bro!

Well, that's '03 in a nutshell. Hopefully the future holds better things...
5/30/2002   Our ISP poorly planned the migration, and the HBD network in total was inaccessible from about 3pm Friday until about noon Tuesday. DNS records propagation seemed to have completed late Wednesday, and I was able to restart the mail server this morning.
05/23/02   The HBD will be offline from approximately 3pm Eastern on Friday 5/23/02 whilst we transit to a new set of IP addresses. We will be down anywhere from an hour up to 12 hours. During this period, please refrain from sending "test" messages to the HBD. INstead, send the word "status" to req@hbd.org. If it replies, we're back online. If not, please be patient.

See you on the other side...

03/14/02  Yargh, what a day! Server crashed some time during the early morning, and was discovered after I went to work. A call in to the Loverly Kim for a reboot yielded the dreaded "I'm leaving you! You love this server more than me!" - er, no! It yielded the dreaded "Well, I hit reset, it counted the RAM, and now it says 'wait' and there's a cursor flashing." Noooooooo! Not a hardware failure? Not NOW!

Well, there was nothing to be done from over 20 miles away. Kim shut the box down to await my return this evening. In any case, it turned out to be an overheat condition. Once I returned home and fired the old girl up, she industrously went about the task of coming back to life. Sorry for the outtage. I'll add more cooling to the beast this w/e.

02/26/02   I s'pose this is only important to those using the side lists on the server - dbd, hvd, cheese, etc. plus all the club lists. Anyway, due to a very aggressive spammer who seemed constantly able to beat every filter in place for these lists, and for a few viruses that have slipped through, I have been forced to implement some pretty agressive system-wide filter terms in Majordomo. This should greatly reduce the incursion of spam and infected mail into these lists, but may also make it more difficult for you to post to them. Particularly if you have not already set your mailer to send plain text only (that's a hint. See the HBD faq for info on just how you should set your mail client up).

Hopefully, through this action, I will recieve fewer "HOW DID SPAM GET ON THIS LIST?!" notes and won't have to feel guilty when someone gets their PC infected by being foolish enough to open an unrequested attachment sent from the machine of one who was obviously similarly foolish (there's another hint there. That and keep an up-to-date virus scanner on your machine...).

In the meantime, I continue looking for a better solution. And a few spare moments.

01/31/02   Wow! Huge ice storm out this way! System came down at about 9:04 am EDT - about a half hour after the power went out (UPS is great, but not THAT great!) - and we have buried power lines! Guess a main came down. In any case, if you were thinking the problem was on your end: uh-uh. T'was at ours. The system was unavailable unil about 6:30 pm.
12/31/01   A big "Ditto" on that below for tonight - also known as "Amateur Night" hereabouts. At one time, the term indicated that all those who couldn't drive after drinking were the amateurs. I think a better interpretation would be that those who celebrate in excess without ensuring the security of themselves and others around them - by hiring a cab, hiring a limo, or having a sober designated driver - are the amateurs. So, all you pros, look out for the amateurs in our midst. If you see someone who is in no condition to drive, yet heading for their car, take their keys and get them home by some other means. They might be insulted, you say? Better insulted than dead. An insult, you can get over. Being dead or the direct cause of someone else's death is a forever thing.

Happy, Healthy New Year to all of you! Let's show them the responsibility we brewers put on our hobby and the consumption of its fruits.

(And I'd be remiss if I didn't also wish y'all a "Hoppy Brew Year", now, wouldn't I?)

12/24/01   Seasons Greetings, Beerlings! Take me to your holiday ale...

We at the HBD wish you all a safe, happy and blessed Christmas. Christmas Eve is a wonderful time to be with friends and family. It is also a time in which many of us find ourselves on the road in pursuit of time with those friends and family. Be safe when doing so. If you intend to drive, please cut back on the holiday cheer so that we find you back here poring over the HBD. Remember that the consequences of indiscretion with drinking and driving can be devastating - both to you and yours as well as to perfect strangers should you meet head-on in your travels.

Lets also spare a few silent moments during our holiday celebrations to remember those that have perished this year through no fault of their own and, in particular, for those who they have left behind. This will be a very hard holiday season for many. If you know of someone who will be spending the holidays bereft of their loved ones, or simply someone who will be alone, why not invite them by for a fine home brew and a few hours of your companionship? The rewards are unbelievable!

12/22/01  Well, the new ISP is in place, and besides some potential financial wrangling with the old ISP in order to ensure we don't end up double-paying for service, we should be shut with the ISP bankruptcy debacle.

The old ISP raised the rates in October (forwarned, but they "forgot" to invoice anyone whilst they were busy going bankrupt...), so this increased rate is the one which our new ISP has signed up to honor. To this end, we are proposing an adjustment to our sponsorship schedule. Proposed changes are in red on the "Sponsor the HBD" menu pick. Please review and provide any comments.

Finally, the upgrade to the mail transport was suspended. Be advised that the HBD itself is immune from passing viruses to your mail, but the side lists enjoy no such immunity. There should NEVER be any attachments in any of the side lists. If you receive one, do not open it.

Happy Holidays to all of you!

12/9/01   Beginning an upgrade to our mail transport system in order to incorporate virus filters. If you do not receive your Digest 12/10/01 am, it will be because I broke the transport :^) Hopefully, that will not happen, and this note will be rendered moot....
12/8/01  Doh! Our ISP has gone bankrupt (dagnabbit economy That's TWO of our suppliers gone!!), and our account has been acquired by a new ISP. Some disruption of service may be in our future - they will do their best to transfer IPs, etc, to their network, but have stated that they may have to reassign in some cases. No idea yet what bearing this has on our monthly bill and our ability to host virtual domains, though. Wish us luck, and I'll try to keep you posted!
12/6/01 Odd! Spam seems to slip through Majordomo's subscriber filters on the side lists. Any Majordomo experts out there who have any info on configuring the software to ABSOLUTELY exclude non-subscribers from being able to post? Currently using the "restrict post" keyword to restrict to the subscriber list and HBD admin...
12/3/01 Aargh! Our teeshirt manufacturer went out of the biz! We need one that will do "one-fors"; ie, we send an order, they send a shirt (we can't hold an inventory, nor prepay for one.) Anyone know of a good, established tee-shirt/clothing silk-screener (or whatever it is they do these days) who might be able to fill that bill? Have them email pbabcock@hbd.org...
10/16/01 Brief outtage tonight - router must have taken a whack in all the storms we've had through here, and I troubleshot DNS until I was blue in the face. On a whim, I disconnected the WAN from the router, and noticed no change in the channel status lamp. The astute will note that the "Ready" lamp and channel status lamps should have gone out. Anyway, one power-reset later, and all is once again right with the world. Sigh. Sometimes it IS the easy stuff...
STILL haven't got the HBD on its new server. What a slug I am...
3/11/01 Rather than do the more meaningful task of transferring the HBD to new servers - already a week late, I succumbed to my migraine, and did the more relaxing job (Yeah! Right!) of revamping the site to it's "new look". Be sure to Drop me a line and let me know what you think, any bugs or fubars you hit, or if that nasty "Nacho Puke" background image is still floating (Eeeewww!) around somewhere. In particular, I need someone with a browser incapable of frames to tell me whether the "no frames" portion is working properly.

And thanks to Wayne Holder aka Zymie for pointing out the putrificating effects of the last "strategy"!

More changes on the way! Keep your eyes glued to your monitor, and watch them pop up!

2/24/01 Well, we're in transition again. Any who have been following this page will note the loss of some of the announcements - notably any between 1/14/01 and today. Isn't it amazing that it is precisely when you need it that you discover a tool has failed you? In configuring one of the new servers, the entire root of the HBD website was obliterated. No problem! I'll go to the backup tapes! Doh! ANOTHER drive that needs warranty work. Sigh. Anyway, I had pulled the site to my local hard drive 1/14/01, so it wasn't THAT bad. I was able to reconstruct the ledger file from bank records, and most of the donors' page through personal records. I'm sure I have missed some donors - those that come by check are "transient" records once the check is in the bank and I've discarded the envelope (sorry!). Some of the enhancements made following that date are missing, of course, but the site appears to be back in order and fully functional. If you happen to notice something amiss, please be sure to let me know!

Transfer of the HBD to the new server is tentatively scheduled for 3/4/01 or thereabouts.

1/15/01 Brief crash this evening, sometime between 10:00pm EST and 11:30pm EST. Brought back online once discovered.

Check out the new features added today:

12/21/00 Two goodies:
  • Fleamarket script is repaired!
  • The HBD Competition Calendar software has been updated!
12/18/00 Couple of things:
  • There seems to be an outage somwhere past Chicago making the HBD inaccessible to some (like Karl, for instance :-) I've notified our ISP, they say it is off of their network. (It was - they fixed it at around 3:30 Central...)
  • There is a bug in the Home Brew Flea Market scripts that gives you a server configuration error immediately after posting your ad. This only affects the notification I receive to review your ad, and I've noted it and am working on it. In the meantime, either reload the page, or back-arrow to the menu. I've taken to checking my preview queue every now and again rather than wait around for notification. I should either have your ad approved, or contact you with any required changes within 24 hours. As for the bug, as soon as I figure it out, I'll repair the puppy! (That means I'm working on it :-)
12/09/00 In answer to repeated requests, the HBD home page is undergoing a long-overdue overhaul. Please bear with us as we bring about many of the changes you have requested. These will include:

  • A bulletin board (Already implemented in cooperation with The Brewery - see "Discussions" on the menu at left.)
  • A classified ad system (On it's way! The Home Brew Flea Market is being redeveloped specifically for the HBD site, and will be moved from The Home Brew Page before the end of this year.)
  • An online "Chat" (Working to identify the ideal software for a HBD chat.)
  • Web-based HBD subscription management system. (On its way! Targeting 1st quarter 2001.)
  • Enhanced educational and reference content. (Underway! Watch the site for its roll out!)

We have already "freshened" the look of the HBD pages with a more "beery" look! (The banner frame background is a digital photo of the head of Pat's barley wine :-) We hope you enjoy the new look and content of the page as it develops. And keep those suggestions coming! Suggestions for the page are ALWAYS welcome at webmaster@hbd.org

11/28/00  Our new host experienced a VERY LONG outage today! We had hoped that they would be less frequent than they were there with our previous host, but... Anyway, we're back up now. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Many still may not be receiving the Digest currently - particularly if their ISP check DNS prior to allowing mail into the domain (many now do). In this case, I'm afraid you will not receive the HBD until the DNS changes made propagate to your ISP. Your continued patience is appreciated! They will eventually catch up. In the meantime, there is the web version at http://hbd.org/hbd or the archives at ftp://hbd.org/pub/hbd/digest. If you still run into trouble accessing, use 63.219.236.210 in place of hbd.org. Again: if you can access this, but know of others who cannot, pass along the IP address. Thanks!

11/16/99 The HBD servers have been moved to their own network. Expect a brief period of instability while DNS servers across the internet "catch up" with the change.
