Q: Anyone have thoughts and/or advice on converting a 15.5 Gallon Keg
to a brew Kettle?
A: I've converted two kegs using this method, it worked great. Critical
to the process is starting with the lid before you cut so you know
what diameter, using a jig to hold the dremel, and wearing ear AND
eye protection. Filling the keg 1/2 full of water really helps with
stability and sound.

Should take you about 20 minutes and about 5-6 discs per keg.
I have Zymico Weld-B-GoneTM weldless fittings through-out my system
(three 1/2" valves, two thermometers, and one sight-glass) , and have
been VERY pleased - all stainless, and they never leak. I purchased
them all from Grape & Granary:

Before drilling the hole I would suggest you pick up your plumbing
first, and then size the hole; for Zymco Weld-B-GoneTM fittings,
mine were 7/8" holes for the 1/2" valves. If you are going to do
more than one hole, you are better off investing in a step-drill -
they cost around $30, but you can re-use the bit numerous times and
it leaves a very clean finish. Go slow, lean into it, and use lots
of oil! I would also suggest you do a sample hole or two in the top
(assuming you are going to discard it) just to get a feel for how
the bit cuts (regardless if you get a cheap hole saw or step bit).
Best if you have someone help you while drilling BTW. ~ Vince
